Fall Porch Decor with Chickens

Thursday, October 15, 2015

After reading NanaDiana's post today about decorating her porch with a wagon her son had given her, (and you can read her highly entertaining and hilarious post here), I remembered that I had a rustic, completely wooden wagon stuffed into our storage area.  Hmm. It got me to thinking... I needed to get it out and put it on display.  When we moved, because we were so limited on time, and because winter was coming fast, my thought was to streamline the moving process and to put into storage most of our outdoor decor, so as to make the transition to winter smoother for us.

However... dear NanaDiana swayed me today and I changed my mind... and I traipsed out to our storage area, and dug out the wooden wagon.  Oh yes, it will mean more work in just a few days to put it all back, but I wanted a pretty front porch today, and decided it was worth the effort to do this.

I wandered around our property and gathered some dried corn stacks, acorns, pine branches, some wooden stakes...

As I was arranging it all, Annie came to lie down close by the action, and observe.

Then I noticed that she was intently watching something...

... oh boy, here come the chickens!

I guess they wanted to help me decorate...

Or was it that they were interested in the bright colors...

Goldie joined the crew...

Ahh, so that is what it was!  The chickens were after the dried corn stalks...

Roger and Annie weren't sure what to think of all the chickens on the front porch!

Hey everyone, supper's been served, come one come all! ....

Rudy didn't come though.  Rudy has kept his distance from me the past couple of days since the attack, as I've carried a stick with me when out and about in the yard.  He didn't bother to come over and see what the hens were doing on my porch.  That didn't hurt my feelings at all, lol!

Goldie was rather disappointed with the fake leaves she was nibbling on...

But the corn stalks, now that right there is some good stuff! Lol!

Sitting on my welcome sign... talk about making yourself welcome and at  home!

See how good Annie has become!  She seems to have understood that chickens are off limits for her, at least when I'm around anyway, lol!

My sweet Goldie, she is such a funny little girl!  She loves to be close by me whenever I'm in the yard.  You can't help but adore the little darling!

Welcome to my world, where the front porch is just another stepping stone for the chickens... in their minds, it all has been put out here for them, lol!

I wondered how long my front porch decor will last.  But... aren't these two ladies pretty! I love how they are framing my little "Bless this Family" sign. It looked great until they knocked it off right after I took this picture, lol!

Enjoying the fall gourmet dinner...

Funny thing is, the chickens can access my garden anytime and eat the corn stalks that I've left there for them, and they mostly ignore them, but as soon as I put corn stalks on my front porch, why it must be meal time {smile}...

Such a pretty lady!

An old watering can that I dressed up with some fall ribbon.

Finally the chickens departed because the bluejay showed up, and they were more interested in eating birdseed than corn stalks.

We'll see how long this fall decor lasts.  It was fun putting it together, and at least I got a few pictures.  :)

Happy Fall Y'all!

  2. Oh, my! This is just hilarious! And the beautiful pictures! Oh, I enjoyed them SO much! You did a wonderful job putting together such a lovely, welcoming, homey display! So thankful you got the pictures for us before the "darlings" came and invaded it all!!!! They are so funny! And, that Rudy...oh, my. He must still be pouting or still angry from the other day. I never realized they have such personalities like this. SO interesting. I will definitely go over to the blog you mentioned and read her post. Thank you so much for the humor and sweet post....I needed to laugh tonight! God bless you, my dear, precious friend. Love and appreciate you so much!

    1. It was such a funny moment for sure, to try to decorate my porch with the chicken's help - or not! LOL! And I was glad that Rudy didn't try to come and help... I am keeping a broom or stick close by me now, and I think he has learned to keep his distance from me. Oh yes, the chickens definitely have personalities, some more than others. Goldie is definitely attached to me, and she is so sweet.

NanaDiana is quite hilarious, and her posts are always fun to read, and you can always get a good laugh from her posts. :)

Appreciate you so much too, and hope all is well with you today!

  4. THAT is hysterical!!!! Love that photo of them framing the sign...lol...Maybe you should just put little leaf rings around the chickens necks- put a small coop on the front porch and THEY could be your fall decorations....or dinner, if they won't cooperate. lol
Loved this post- I knew you had a funny bone in ya! xo Diana

    1. Haha, that would be funny to do, but unlikely, lol! Anytime I go out into my yard, I have a "following". I can't imagine the day when I have to eat some of these chickens, I have gotten really attached to them. Glad you enjoyed the post, and hope you are having a wonderful time with your kids this weekend :)

  5. What a great post! Now that the girls know what is on the porch, maybe they won't bother with it...lol. They probably just wanted to be a part of the photo shoot...you know how vain women can be.
    Cute arrangement!

  6. Oh my gosh, I just laughed out loud...sitting on the welcome sign. Ha!! It's always the way, isn't it? Whether it's kids who want nothing to do with the toys until you're ready to donate them or chickens who ignore corn stalks until you want to decorate with them...I guess that is what makes life interesting. Fun, fun, fun. Thanks for the giggle this morning!

    1. It was pretty hilarious. I thought they added a lot of character to the decor, and amazingly, most of it is still there - minus the corn stalks, lol! They've hauled all those out and off the porch, stinkers!

  7. So, so funny! You captured some great shots for this post. Chickens truly do rule, don't they? I think they add so much charm to your fall decor. They keep it real. The dogs are cute, too. Just love how they're lying low, but still Annie has her eye on everything going on. And Roger is being so coy. Appearing to look the other way, but you just KNOW he's looking out of the corner of his eye. hehe. Love this! xo ~ Nancy

    1. Thanks Nancy, it ended up being pretty funny with the chickens helping out. The chickens really do rule around here... nothing misses their attention in the yard - and every time I go outside, I have a following, so funny. And the dogs are learning to get along with the chickens, but I still don't trust Annie, as obedient as she seems at times. I know what she does with the trash whenever she gets left inside alone by mistake, and I know that when she is alone, all the "rules" fly out the window, so we still try to keep a careful eye on her. Roger doesn't bother the "girls" at all, thankfully! Appreciate your visit today :)

  8. You girls, including the chickens inspire me. I think a lot of us last year did miss a bit of fall... We lost our grandson in the mountains and everything just stopped! I really enjoyed this post and yes I am inspired to do something. We did have two fall parties with a hayride and bonfire Your a Blessing, Roxy

    1. I didn't do much for fall last year, it kind of was a blur for us too, but this year I felt a little more ambitious to do something, and NanaDiana and her wagon really inspired me. I can imagine how awful your fall was last year with your grandson, but what a miracle that he was found! A hayride and bonfire sounds like a ton of fun! That is a great way to celebrate fall indeed! Have a wonderful fall weekend!

    1. I was quite happy to remember my wooden wagon in storage, pull it out, and put it to good use and appreciate NanaDiana's inspiration too! Oh yes, the chickens fit quite well, but they've made themselves too much at home - I've had to wipe off chicken poo from the welcome sign, oh my! Such is life with these chickens! {smile} Hope all is well with you my dear friend! :)
