Ice. Snow. Rain. More Snow... I'll take the Snow!

Thursday, January 14, 2016

We've had our fair share of interesting weather the last few days.  The warmer, above-freezing temps in the 30s along with the rain made for some interesting driving... as some of you know from my post yesterday.

This morning, we woke up to a joyful sight... snow!  Quite a bit of the fluffy stuff had fallen during the night, and the temps were below freezing, causing the snow to stick to everything offering a place to rest, and the result... a winter wonderland outside!

Well, if you've been reading this blog very long... you know me.  I can't resist the snow when it falls in such beauty, and so I was outside quite early waking up the chickens, and then I took Annie for a walk. Enjoy our adventure through the eyes of my camera....

Heavy snow weighing this tiny tree down..

You can see the texture of the snow in this picture... heavy, and wet!

The garden's silence underneath the heavy white blanket...

Miss Eleanor enjoying the morning scratch grains ...

Is it a good morning.... or not? ... she's thinking on that one... !

Rudy keeping a close eye on me.  He doesn't care to get his picture taken...

Goldie and Eleanor fighting over the snow... such is the life of chickens!

No one likes the snow more than this sweet girl!

My nose hurts to just think of doing this... but not Annie-girl... it's her favorite snow thing to do!

Back to Mr. Rudy... he's on probation for an attack on me several days ago... but lately he's been behaving.  Let's hope it continues!

I made some snowballs and threw them into the pen for the girls...

I opened the door to see which one would venture out. Momma Mia tried it... stepping high ...

And on second thoughts...

I'll just hang around inside, thanks very much!

Then I closed the door, because the turkeys had come calling.  I've had a problem with the turkeys hanging out around the chicken run, and Annie and Roger have been working on keeping them away.

So the turkeys have been hanging out in the driveway where they are out of reach of Annie and Roger.

Annie and I went for a walk.  The sun was just waking up, and I hadn't even had breakfast yet.  But... I knew the gentle sunrise wasn't going to last for long.

The next storm front on the horizon was moving in even while the sun was trying to make an entrance.

A patch of blue sky amidst the hovering moisture-laden clouds...

Our neighbor's darling red barn tucked in the rolling hills..

Climbing this steep hill is always a great morning workout!

Distant mountain covered in hazy snow mist...

Back at home... turkeys are still hanging out in the messy driveway... to Annie's delight, lol!  You can see just how messy this ice/snow/rain/snow mix is.  Time to get the tractor out to plow before the temps get too warm and the snow gets even heavier than it already is.

A slushy, heavy, nasty mess, that's what our driveway is!  Our son working away at getting the driveway in better shape.  It took a long time, more time than he had.

These two couldn't be happier playing in the soft snow.

Son was making progress with the driveway, but in the end, I called him in and told him to get going. I didn't want him to be late... he can finish it later today when he gets back home.  At least it's a bit more driveable than it was to begin with.

On days like this... don't you just want to have a life like this happy fellow?  :)

Have a wonderful Thursday!

  1. This makes me miss my home state where we got feet of snow each year instead of the occasional dusting I get here! Thanks for sharing the lovely white pictures!

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed the "virtual snow"! Last year we really got just a bit of dusting of snow too it seems, so this year, all the snow we are getting is very welcome :) Have a blessed day my friend!

  2. The dogs look so happy in the snow and your kitty is enjoying it from the inside! I love looking at chicken pictures! I can imagine their feet would be soooo cold out in the snow! :-)

    1. Yes, it is so fun to watch our fur balls play in the snow, they are so entertaining! And my chickens like to eat the snow off my boots, and any snowballs I throw in there for them, but they really don't want to walk in it, lol!

  3. What a beautiful snow! The photos are great! I like the one with the red barn, so pretty. And yes, I would love to have the life of a cat ~ just lay around all day, sleep when I feel like it, and have the humans wait on me when I'm hungry or need to go out. What a life. LOL :-) Enjoy your night!

    1. I do love the picture of the red barn... I see it every day when I walk, and it always brings joy to my heart to see it sitting there nestled in the hills with the mountains in the background.

And yes, cats really do have the great life, don't they! lol... Appreciate your visit, and pray you have a blessed day today :)

  4. I love the snow too, it's pretty and fun to discover what has left their tracks in it. Something has been walking across our backyard pond to drink from the hole we keep open for the overwintering fish and frogs and I suspect it could be a skunk - they like to den under my garden shed.
Your landscape is beautiful and perfect for your dogs to frolic. If walking my dog, he has to wear boots because our roads and sidewalks are salted and burn his pads. He'll start to limp or just sit down and whine because of the pain.
I see flocks of wild turkeys in the fields here sometimes gleaning any leftover corn or grain on the ground, what is the group on your driveway hoping to get?

    1. Yes, watching the tracks really is fun in the winter, because you can see who has been where! I see many turkey tracks around the chicken coop, as well as tracks of a certain orange cat, lol!

Your poor doggy, with his pads being so sensitive to the salt, that is no fun! Yes, here we have plenty of places to walk without salt being there first. I love that :)

We threw some birdseed out on the driveway when it was so cold. The turkeys haven't forgotten and keep coming back to see if they can find more, or perhaps leftovers, lol!

Appreciate your visit and hope you are having a wonderful day!

  7. Oh, my! This is just wonderful! I feel like I am right there, walking alongside you, enjoying the sites, and praising Him for all of the wonder! Your photos are just outstanding, as usual, and you just know how to capture the moments and scenes with such precision. These pictures should grace the pages of magazines, without a doubt! So thankful your son was able to clear the driveway some, and I see that meanness in Mr. Rudy's eyes! LOL! That character is something else! Shame on him for being so mean to you...if only he knew how much you love him, he might take it a little easier on you!! :) Thank you for another wonderful post...it is always such a dear blessing to see your posts in my inbox! Sending you much love and many hugs!

    1. This is so wonderful, the world of blogging, where we can share our moments and photos with others, and spread the joy! Indeed it is such a joyful thing for me to be able to get share the beautiful world we live in with others!

I'll talk to Mr. Rudy and tell him what you said... :) We have a truce now, of sorts, and I hope it continues. I really think he is such a handsome fellow, and he is such a gentleman to the ladies, always making sure all the hens get the treats before he gets any. So I've learned what is his favorite treat - corn - and part of our truce is I throw him some corn, and then he leaves me alone. :)

It is always a blessing to see your comments show up, I appreciate them so very much, and hope that your day has been blessed, and sweet in the Lord!

  8. Oh how beautiful! It reminds me of Winter visits to my daughter when she lived in Northern BC and had 6 months of snow. So pretty, but a bit difficult for driving, walking etc.
    Cats have the best ideas!

    1. Yes, we are very close to the border of southern BC, and our climate very similar. Lots of snow is good for us though, we need it, and it makes our summers so much nicer if we get enough snow... although yes, the driving part, ehh... that part is not always so fun... I had another adventure today... that I will be posting about soon, so stay tuned, it's a good one :) Appreciate your visit, and hope you have had a wonderful day!

  9. I always love looking at your snow photos, but I cannot say that in real life I am a big fan of the white stuff. The past several years have been brutal and we were buried from January until April. Our roads are not really made for that kind of driving. There are lots of very narrow and steep hills here at the beach and it makes getting around treacherous. So far, we have seen just a few flakes and that is fine with me! I can visit your blog and look at all the icy and snowy pretty I want! Now that is my perfect winter!! ;)

    1. Snow is not fun if you live in a climate that does not expect it and prepare for it. Here, the first of November, the road noise changes dramatically because everyone has their studded tires on. All the 4x4 vehicles that were parked for the summer are out. People here expect winter to be winter. Having lived in Texas, I know just how unprepared people are for the white stuff there, and can certainly sympathize with you. Not so fun at all, the driving part at least!

Well, I had another adventure today. I'll be sharing it soon. Stay tuned, lol!

  11. You do have lots of snow, it looks like us here in ND! The temps here can get quite low. I wonder if you do get low temps in Idaho. It was -3 this Am here. Your chickens are so beautiful and look healthy! Those dogs are so cute! We have a cat in the same color as yours. Beautiful photos!

    1. OOh, -3, ouch! That is cold indeed. Typically our winter temperatures here stay above 0 F. We have had two bouts already this winter though, where they dipped below 0. That is really cold stuff. I feel for ya! Stay warm!

How neat that we have cats that are the same color. Is yours a male cat? I have never seen a female cat that is orange. Just curious :)

Hope your weather is warming up a bit for you, at least into the 20s would be a whole lot better than the minuses!! :)

    1. Oh, I'm so glad that you finally have some snow to speak of! For places that usually get snow, and don't, I feel bad, because I know the trees and rivers really need the snow melt in the spring to sustain them through the summer. That is how it is here, and we had such a terrible summer last year, that I am embracing every snowflake we get this year, because hopefully it will prevent us from having such horrible fires in the summer. At least, one can hope!

Appreciate you stopping by, and hope all is well with you and your family. I know it has been a tough season for you, and you are in my prayers! Have a blessed day my friend :)

  15. You may need to arm yourself with pepper spray when Rudy's around. LOL! Seeing your photos and reading your commentary with a big smile on my face. I wish we lived near each other so we could go for walks together. I have no pet to go with me and I hate to walk alone. I need to, though. And I do like going on walks -- even in the snow. Hugs, Nancy

    1. I have taken to carrying a rectangle piece of plywood, and using it as a "shield", and if he tries to come towards me I hold it up, and block him. He doesn't like it, and that has been working, along with me feeding him corn, lol! I do wish we lived closer to each other too... what a true JOY that would be! If you ever take a trip a bit north, we may just get that walk in :) Hope you have a blessed and wonderful day!
