Spring Chickens

Saturday, March 5, 2016

It's that time of year again!

Our neighbor's field is greening up, and the spring clouds are rolling and filling the sky with excitement.

Spring winds and rains are here.

When the weather begins to dance and roll as warm and cold air collides... you know that spring is coming...

And when you hold a soft baby chick in your hand, a gentle sigh of delight floods your heart.

The happy little chirps and soft fuzzy feathers rustling in the deep pine shavings...

Cute little spring chickens letting me know that yes... spring really is here!

I had ordered some new little chicks.  They are Rhode Island Reds.  Only 5 were able to be picked up today.  Feed stores always have problems with getting the right amount of chicks delivered.  I wanted 10.  5 more will be arriving next week.

The girls and Mr. Rudy were quite inquisitive as to what the new little chicks were doing in their space.

Mr. Rudy especially felt it was his duty to let everyone know he is still the "boss".  Ha.

Mr. Rudy and I have a truce of sorts.  He stays away from me now.  But just out of my reach he likes to act tough.  I enjoy the show... from a distance!  {smiles}

The real predator on the homestead is this one.  I've caught him in the coop more than once.  For now the chicks are very safe in their little enclosure we built for them.  But Mr. Simba and I need to have a serious talk about baby chicks, soon....!

But for now... we are just so excited that our spring chicks are here!  Along with the spring rain, spring mud, and spring winds.  We'll take it all.

Spring is here and I'm glad!

  1. The chicks are so cute. My DIL just got 36 chicks, and the grandchildren think it's just awesome. :-) I'm hoping my hen will hatch the ones she's sitting on and raise them. So far, she hasn't left the nest ~ seems to be a good mother. Yes, I'd be having a serious talk with Mr. Simba about the chicks.:-) Beautiful photos ~ Enjoy your weekend!♥

    1. Wow, 36 chicks is a lot of little babies to take care of! One of our hens hatched out three chicks last year, one of which was Mr. Rudy, lol. Baby chicks are so much fun, love watching them, and holding them. Appreciate your visit Anne, and hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

    1. Yes, Mr. Rudy will need to be taught a lesson about the baby chicks too. This is my first time to have baby chicks with a rooster. He definitely thinks he is King of the roost, lol! Appreciate your visit Mary, and hope you are having a lovely weekend!

  4. Hi,
We are to get into the 50's this week. I am ready for spring too.
We cut down the last sick tree today in our yard. What a job. We needed to use a rope to finally pull the rest of it down. Using the rope was my son Sam's idea. :-)
Love chicks!! I am excited for the day I can have chickens.

    Have a blessed weekend,
    Carla

    1. 50s is really nice weather for this time of year. It has gotten up to 50 a few days here as well. Glad to hear you got the last sick tree out of your yard, sounds like quite a tussle with a rope, oh my! This tree work scares me at times. My husband has been knocking down the trees with our tractor. It is kind of scary, because you don't know how solid the top of the tree is, and if it might break off. I'm in constant prayer with this type of operation going on. I will breath a sigh of relief when we finish!

I do hope you can have chicks someday. They bring so much joy, and fun. So precious. Of course, they are quite a bit of work, lol.

Have a blessed day Carla :)

  5. Beautiful, thank you...we use to have a farm in Alabama and raised chickens. I do miss that sort of living, but love having internet and tv, wink.

Thank you for your kind comments/emails. All will work out...all on God's time...Many Blessings to you.

    1. LOL... we have internet here and could have tv, although we don't. It is a choice of lifestyle for sure, and you are in a different place right now, and that is just how life is... I'm glad you have good memories from your farm living in Alabama!

I am continuing in prayer for you that the Lord will help you through this rough spot you are in! My heart goes out to you with all you have on your plate, and praying the load will get easier for you! Much love to you dear friend!

  7. My daughter asked just last night about chicks. Oh I do love chickens in the yard. Wild dogs got to our flock a couple years ago. I think it's time to begin again. First we have to find out where my husband is going to work. If we have to move, well, chickens probably won't be possible.

Be blessed! Thanks for visiting me at Harvest Lane Cottage!

    1. Oh my! I'm so sorry to hear about the wild dogs getting your flock! I do fear predators with free ranging chickens. Thankfully our dogs seem to do a pretty good job of keeping wild animals away from our yard. I do understand your concern of having to move and having chickens! You can always buy some pullets or hens later if you do decide to have chickens later in the year. I am continuing to pray for you and your husband, as I can only imagine how tough these decisions are for you both! Have a blessed day my friend!

  9. Lovely photo;s cute cute, We too have spring winds, spring rains moving in this week...and soon spring mud. But hey I will take it. We may add a few new Chicken to our coop?? Not chicks...we want to buy some almost ready to lay. We did the chick thing last year. Were good just buying some a little older.

    1. Yes, having chicks is a lot of work. Buying hens almost ready to lay, although a bit more expensive, is without the work of chicks, for sure! Yet, I do so love the sweet baby chicks :) It really is what works best for you, and your family. I've been tempted before to buy the pullets, lol. Hope that you had a blessed weekend :)

  10. You are going to be busy or should I say you ARE busy!
I don't know much about chickens but I was told once, that the older chicken usu sally don't like younger chickens. How are the babies adjusting?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You are right. The older hens are not happy to have new chicks in the flock. Right now, the chicks are separated from the rest of the flock. When they get old enough, I will introduce them a little at a time to the flock and watch them very carefully to make sure that they are not bullied too much by the older hens. And busy, yes, that is the word around here, lol! Appreciate your visit Christine and hope you had a wonderful weekend, and a great week ahead!

We got a puppy, so a new season of busyness around here. Those baby chicks are so cute! That Mr. Simba best be on his way and leave them alone. Ha!

  14. Oh friend, Mr. Rudy brought a smile to my face :) And Mr. Simba...shame on him! I do hope your "talk" with him goes well :)

    It's snowing right now - large and wet flakes. I doubt it will stick, but it's has made for a yucky day. Although I don't mind since I am tucked away inside by the fire {{smiles}}

    Love and hugs to you!

  17. Your chickens look great...so healthy. I got some silver laced wyandotte chicks today. Do you put your chicks out with the big flack right away?
I have never put a new flock in with an older flock before, am not sure how to go about it.
So happy along with you that Spring is on the way...

    1. Hi Shirley, I am learning much about chickens as I go along, and new chicks certainly need to be at least 6-8 weeks old and able to somewhat defend themselves before being mixed with the flock, as a general rule, unless you have a good momma who is taking care of them. I have mixed 6-8 week old pullets in with the flock, but check on them quite often because they can get picked on. I love the silver laced wyandotte chickens, they are so beautiful! We are all happy indeed that spring is coming :)

  18. What wonderful signs of spring there! So nice to see the pasture greening up and the dark rain clouds.....and those sweet little chicks! Adorable. Yes, we'll take it all, even the mud, but it hasn't started here yet as the ground is still frozen. Soon. :)

    1. The happy signs of spring are wonderful aren't they! I do hope that you have begun to see more spring in your part of the world... as for right here, the leaves on shrubs and trees are budding, so it won't be long now before green replaces the brown :)

    1. Mr. Simba is up to no good around the chicken coop. He seems to love to chase the chickens, just for fun, like he does the turkeys too. Stinker! I'm still working on a solution for when the baby chicks get big enough to leave the coop. Hmmm indeed! Have a wonderful day :)
