Fall's Fashion Show

The season of fall offers up so much beauty that I find I want to hold it close to my heart and cry out ...

Slow!
Slow down!
Leaves...
Stop falling...
Just wait, please wait.
Don't fall today,
Hold on tight, don't let go...

Our blazing Red Maple just outside my back porch that we planted this spring

But, the fashion show of fall continues,
with each leaf that changes color
Drifting slowly down the main stage,
 amidst the silent applause
of the drifting clouds above.

The bright colors of this maple bring joy to my heart that such a beautiful tree is growing in our yard.

A close-up picture of one of the red leaves on the tree

Looking close
A drop of water on the leaf
Oh the mysterious joy of it all.

This mountain ash grows far behind the house
deep in our woods,
its beauty showcased silently,
but not unappreciated.

Our family went on a hike through our woods to the tree farm behind us.  For many days now, logging trucks have been chugging by our house, throwing up dust into every nook and cranny of our home.

It always saddens me to see the beautiful trees cut down from their stately views.

We hiked on to the overlook of the sleepy little town we live close to.

Roger saw something in the distance that concerned him.  Funny, he wouldn't speak of it. I'm sure he didn't want to worry us, as he had it under control.

Annie was oblivious to whatever Roger was intrigued by.  She was just happy to be with all of us.

The sadness of the bare ground where once these trees once stood.

We may not have the magnificent hues of the northeast, but we do have lovely shades of color.

Fall is so lovely, bursting with color... one just wants it to last forever!

This deer crossed the road just in front of us.

Back at home... a lazy Simba... always in need of cuddles.

A new life on the farm... this sweet baby chick was born last Friday.  I'm glad that I was able to get this quick picture of her.  At least I think it was a her.  I will never know.

The next morning after I discovered she was born, I found her dead, pecked to death by another hen.  I was heartbroken.  I also found another chick that did not make it as well.  Chickens can be so cruel.

The skies are as full of color as the trees beneath them.

The brilliant shades of orange and purple make me want to touch my finger to the sky and see if it tastes like the cotton candy it reminds me of.

Night shades of our little maple growing grandly by the back porch.

I'm dazzled by her beauty already.  I want more! We must plant more, I tell my husband!

On a late evening walk, when the skies were gently closing the door on the sunlight's retreat, I saw these two girls watching us.  Or should I say, Annie saw them first.  She was very quiet and let me just enjoy their presence.

We stood still and watched them. Annie was quiet, but quivering.  I enjoyed the still moment while it lasted.

Soon the darkening shadows were falling, and we backed away.  Well, Annie was a bit like Lot's wife. She watched them as I walked forward, her gaze never leaving them until they were gone.

It was actually still daylight in this picture, but I loved the soft hues of the darkening shadows as we walked home.

The gentle fog hung over the valley in patches of its own design.

The gentle light of twilight was fading fast.  I enjoyed a hot cup of eggnog tea and a shortbread cookie sent to me in a lovely package by a new friend, Denise when I got home.

Mr. Sal... our chicken rooster... he is scared of everything.. perhaps because Pepper and he are now at odds.  I've not seen them fight... yet.  But he runs, fast.

I can't believe that I still have flowers blooming in the garden.  Such joy they still bring me.

And this one lonely sunflower finally bloomed, after slowly growing all summer long.  I've never heard of a sunflower just blooming in October.  I am going to save its seeds and plant them next year.  This is one determined plant!

I spotted snow atop the mountain west of us.  Winter is knocking at the door.  I hope Fall digs its heels in and stays a bit longer.

Annie doesn't agree with me.  Winter is her favorite season of the year. She is anticipating it.  I will embrace winter when he arrives... but no early welcomes from me yet.  I'm still hoping that fall will stay around a while.

Hold on fall...
Enthrall us with your
Fashion show
As long as you can.
I'll be your audience
As long as the show lasts.

  1. I agree with you. Autumn goes by way to fast.
I liked the photo of the snow on the mountain.
My favorite photo of today is the close up of the beautiful red leaf.

My dad raises chickens as a hobby and sells eggs. He gets so frustrated with how mean chickens can be. I am sorry about yours.

  2. I agree. Fall needs to slow down. In Oklahoma we go from Hot to Cold and it's not fun. I want to see the leaves change and enjoy the change of weather. Happy Fall.

  6. Oh, how beautiful are your lovely pictures! And, dear Annie! I love that picture of her looking over to the right. She and Roger are such pretty dogs. I know you must have enjoyed this wonderful walk with your dear family. I love the expression on the faces of those deer, too. They look so innocent, so inquisitive, so trusting. It breaks my heart to know that people shoot them...I know they have to sometimes, but if it were up to me, they would all live wild and roam free forever! Thank you for sharing such lovely peeks into your beautiful world, sweet friend. Sending you much love and blessings and hugs!!

    1. I'm reminded so often as I work with the chickens, how much our human nature can be like that too... seeing and hearing so much awful things that people do and say to each other... oh my. Without Jesus there wouldn't be a speck of hope in this world!

Yes, we are blessed, incredibly blessed with a bounty of beauty here. I hope you get to experience some fall weather too in your mountains :) Hugs to you today dear friend, I appreciate all that you do to make our little blogging community a blessed place :)

  10. Love your photos of Fall's Fashion Show! WE are finally getting some brilliant colors here-mainly due to the cold night. I have one Burning Bush out of four that is turning a bit red, but nothing like they normally due which is because they were all new bushes this year. I do miss some of the purple trees in Ca., but I love it here.
    Thanks for sharing!
    Hugs, Noreen

  11. Hello, yes it looks amazing in your neck of the woods. You said you had maple leaves, will you be able to get some maple syrup? Yes when you have baby chicks we have found we need to remove them from the hen house and put them in their own pen for a while with their mother hen. It has been so dry here and everything is turning brown just a few yellow leaves on most the trees. Sweet poem you shared!

    Hugs, Roxy

    1. This is not a sugar maple, it is a red maple. I don't think it will produce maple syrup. It would be really awesome if we could plant a maple tree and in our lifetime get to tap it, but I have no idea how long it would take for a sugar maple to do that.

Yes, I will never leave the momma with the baby chick alone in the hen house again. Lesson learned!

Appreciate your visit Roxy, as always, and hope you get to enjoy the fall colors before they blow away!

  12. Nature is really beautiful where you live! I have not seen such red maple leaves here in ND. There was a lovely one in South Dakota by a court house. It's lovely to see the colors of Autumn outdoors. I did not know that chickens can pick their young ones to death. That is cruel indeed.

  13. To be honest, the fall colours in southern Ontario are much like yours, muted tones of gold mostly. It was only when we travelled north that the trees had exploded in colour which is why we head that way each year for Thanksgiving.
How sad to know that hens will peck babies to death, it would break my heart. You're lucky your dog was quiet (although quivering) while observing the deer, I'm sure my guy would be barking like mad.
Enjoy all that autumn has to offer!

    1. Oh it is so awesome to be able to see the beauty and vibrance of the fall colors, and to take a drive north would be so delightful, lucky you! :) I enjoyed your pictures that you shared so much. Chickens indeed are quite mean to each other, so sad. Annie is on a leash when we walk, so she is not free to do as she pleases, but we never have deer in our yard anymore... and I know why, lol!

      Hugs to you today!

  17. Beautiful photos. I like the red maple too and thought you got some amazing shots. I like the one with the snow covered mountain; it reminds me of northern AZ. Fall is my favorite and I never tire of looking at God's beauty in it. How did you get photos of deer so close? What beauty. Thank you for sharing! The dead chicken has a story about their nature for sure. How do they ever survive?

    1. Thank you so much for your sweet words! I have a zoom lens on my camera, so that helped to bring them in a little closer, even still, they usually don't like my lens, and run off. I guess they just decided it was better to watch me instead of run, lol! No, I never get tired of the beauty around us that God has blessed us with.. and I never cease to be amazed at chickens and how cruel they can be to each other. Appreciate your visit today, and hope you are able to enjoy some fall beauty in your world too :)

  18. Hi Marilyn! I love the idea of fall being a fashion show. It sure is! I'm still looking forward to seeing it around here. The days are getting cooler, so maybe soon?
I'm so sorry about your dear chickens. I agree! Nature has it's cruel side. I remember when my son bought a crayfish for his aquarium. That darn thing ate fish like crazy, reducing my son to tears. So hard to explain that's just the way it is sometimes.
    Blessings!

    1. Yes, nature's cruel side is hard sometimes for us to understand, but then when I look around and see how cruel humans can be to each other... well, I just don't know. I'm glad I can look up to the Lord, past some of the stuff that goes on around us. I hope you get to enjoy a fashion show from Fall, it is always later in the south. Winter is headed our way far too fast, lol! Hugs to you today!
