Cozy Snowy Sewing Days

Thursday, February 9, 2017

This has been the week for wild and wet weather!  We got over a foot of snow over the past weekend, followed by rain, then more snow, then more rain, and more snow... and today we got a slosh of freezing rain after an inch or two of snow fell last night, making the whole world around very, very sloppy and drippy!  This is not walking weather at all, but rather the perfect kind of day to cozy up inside with a good hot cup of tea, with the whirr of the sewing machine accompanied by occasional thumps from outside with the ice and snow melting.

You may remember the lovely Barbara who blogs at Small Moments held a fabric giveaway earlier this year, and I was the lucky recipient of her giveaway!

Well, this past week, I was able to find the time - thanks to the lovely cozy weather we are having - to get busy on a little project I had in mind with the fabric she sent me.

It was a gorgeous selection of fabrics, with each piece probably about the size of a fat quarter, except for one larger piece (which I did not use this time).

In a previous post here, I shared how I used a die-cut machine to cut fabric to make a flower.

In this project, instead of using the circle scallop die, I used the square die to cut out four scalloped squares from each piece of the coordinating fabric Barbara sent me. I layered quilt batting between the squares, and sewed an "X" on each square to tack down the batting.

After placing all the pieces together in a pleasing manner to my eye, I sewed them together to make a large square.

My plan was to make a pillow out of these pieces. My next step was to cut out the backing for the pillow and sew it all together.

Now, it was time to wash and dry the pillow to "fluff" up the cut edges, and create a homespun fluffy look to the pillow.

While the pillow was washing, I started on the next project, but there was a bit of interruption.

Mr. Simba did NOT like the spinning spool of thread, and thought the world would be a better place without it!

I coaxed him into my lap and soothed his little heart with cuddles and soon he forgot about the evil sewing machine and its whirring thread monster. Perhaps that's what all the commotion was about any way... he was just jealous of my attention given to the machine, and not to him!

With a few of the remaining squares I had left, I sewed up this quick little potholder, using basically the same technique as I used with the pillow.

And here is the "mystery" picture that I mentioned in this post.  This was all that was left out of the collection of fabrics Barbara sent me (except for one larger piece of pink flowered fabric).  These were the scraps left from the scalloped squares that I cut out.  I hated to just throw these beautiful pieces into my leftover fabric scrap pile, and so I let them sit out a while for me to ponder them.  What to do with them? They were so pretty!

Finally I settled on making a little stuffed pincushion for my needles. (Some of you were very close with your guesses!)

With a shabby fabric rose sewed into the center, this was the perfect little pincushion that I have been needing for a long time.

These shabby roses add the sweetest touch to just about every sewing project I do!

A perfect way to use up the little scraps that were left over!

The finished pillow....

It adds the perfect springy touch in my living room with my neural colored couches, and brown and turquoise pillows.

The finished potholder...

I'd been wanting to try this little pattern for fabric bookmarks after seeing the tutorial on Kelly-Anne's blog, Diary of a Country Girl.  Excellent instructions for making your own bookmarks that won't get torn and are simply a beautiful way to enjoy a good book and never lose your spot.

So there you have it... my little collection of projects from the last day or so when I've been cozied up in my sewing room.  I've a few more projects I've been working on, but I'll save those for another day.

I'm sure your wondering what our little cutie has been up to... or maybe you want to see some snow.  Well, I aim to please... lol!  For those of you who don't have snow to enjoy, I hope you enjoy this little taste of winter, along with a peek into the cozy days we are having.

Mr. Simba has definitely has got a chip on his shoulder lately, with the arrival of little Riley, and the ironing board has been his favorite sleeping place... high enough to keep away from the loving attempts of Riley to make friends.  Mr. Simba will have none of it!

Roger loves wrestling with Riley, and it is a hoot to watch the two of them roll around together.

Two very silly dogs!

We took a quick walk one afternoon before the snow came back in again.

I took this picture of Annie guarding the feed block from the turkeys.  She certainly isn't making any friends in the world of turkeys!

A perfect vantage point for Riley to keep an eye on all the action outside.

Uh.oh.  Yes.  Sad news.  The tractor is stuck!  I called in a professional plowman to come and get it unstuck, and plow our driveway.  He almost got stuck with his chained up bobcat, and gave up... of course I still owed him the $50.00 for trying!  Sigh.  Things like this always happen when my dear husband is out of town.  He will be home tomorrow... and boy I can't wait! I know he has a few tricks up his sleeve and I'm sure we will get it unstuck.  Until then, there she sits.

Not sure what Roger is looking at here, but he was quite intent on whatever it was!

The snow is piling up around us!

Our son's car, parked for the winter... can you even see the car? LOL!

Just an idea of the collection of the snow we've had all winter.

The chickens haven't been impressed at all with the additional snow, and mostly just stay inside the coop, rarely coming out into the run.

Lots of poor man's fertilizer in here!

My poor little greenhouse.... all bundled up in the deep white snow. I have to keep the roof shoveled, because it is made of plastic.

Has winter caused any excitement for you this year?  I have certainly enjoyed the cozy snowy days we've had, but I'll admit, along with my furry and feathered friends, that we are beginning to look forward to spring :)

  4. I love your pillow - and thanks for the explanation of what a serger does. I now remember reading that somewhere, but it was buried in the "not need to know file" of my mind.

I just grabbed two bags of phlox at Costco - 10 each. I did this last year and thought they'd be fine in the barn until planting time. I thought wrong. So..........I'm getting ready to drag in a hug bag of potting mix to thaw out and then I'll plant the phlox in 1 gallon containers. Naturally this will make a total mess out of my dining room, but hopefully I'll end up with 10 new phlox come spring.

I'll be so glad when this winter is over.

Wouldn't it be nice if Riley stayed that size forever. He is heartbreakingly cute.

I don't blame Mr. Simba one little bit. He and I know how dangerous a spool of thread on a rampage can be. Terrifying!

  7. That's really interesting how you put that pillow together. I may not look at raw selvedges like how I did before! Is that fabric 100% cotton or a cotton- polyester blend? I hope your husband can get the tractor out.

    1. 100% cotton is best to use to get the nicer frayed edges, I think. I'm not sure of the fabric content as they were a gift to me, but I suspect they probably were. We did get the tractor unstuck and back in the shed. It is raining today, so we will probably lose a lot of snow bulk today. Hope you are doing well :)

Yes, we did get a ton of snow, but today we are getting rain, so quite a bit of it will probably melt, lol! Thank you for always inspiring with your excellent tutorials, I appreciate your clear directions so much with great pictures too! I don't have the time to sew as much as I would like to, but when I do get to sew, I enjoy it so much. 12. I certainly don't envy you with all that white stuff! We were in that situation a few weeks ago but alot has melted as we've had some warm days.. thank goodness. Your son's buried car looks suspiciously like my car did a few weeks ago! Yikes... I was not a happy girl. I bet you'll be glad when hubby gets home and gets the tractor unstuck. Good time to be sewing and love the way you made your shabby ruffly pillow. What a neat idea! And pin cushions are darling as well as the bookmarks. Isn't it fun to get things done???I'm so bad at not finishing things.. and then I move on to a new project. Your doggies are so cute and your white Annie is gorgeous. She reminds me of one my son had years ago.. he was part wolf and part huskie and pure white... we got him when he was 6 weeks old and my son had him until he was about 16 years.. they grew up together. You've inspired me to get out my sewing maybe this weekend and try to finish a project! Hugs.. Marilyn from Oregon

We are getting rain here today, so quite a bit probably will melt. I know what you mean about starting projects and then reaching a bit of a block, and setting it aside, lol, yes I have lots of those! I enjoy sewing but don't have a lot of time to devote to it, except in the winter months. How interesting about your dog that is part wolf. Annie is part husky and german shepherd. She is a gentle giant! I hope she gets to live as long as your sweet dog did! Hopefully you had a lovely and productive weekend :) Hugs to you today!

  22. Your beautiful fingers have been quite busy with your machine and the material you won is darling. Spring beauty for sure gracing your living room with that darling pillow.
You made good use of every scrap piece.
My dear Stephanie made me one of those gorgeous book marks and I just love pulling it out of my devotional book daily.
Mr Simba is too funny! Cats are something else when they get their nose out of joint! I had to laugh when you said he was sitting on the ironing board just high enough to be out of the way of dear Riley. Our Toby does the same thing when my older daughters boys come, He wants to see all the action, but yet keep his distance. Those three boys have a lot of energy. :-)
Winter this year for us has been the strangest! In all the years I have lived here we have never had a winter quite like this. It reminds me of the type of weather the east has, snow, rain, freezing rain, gray days, melting and then freezing all over again. Our property is surrounded with incredible ice making it quite dangerous. My husband uses the Bob cat and tries to keep it cleaned up, but sometimes to no avail.
Even with the weather being strange, God's beauty shines forth and I praise Him.

    Have a most wonderful weekend~

  37. Whatever you have had in the weather dept must have come to us. It's one misery after the next, which includes not only the physical stuff like actually moving the stuff, but the $ it takes. I will have to hire the plowman and the roof man to clear the weight of snow off. Oh well, enough of that...

    1. Oh, I hear your pain with the extra $$ that it takes to remove the snow! We have had to shovel our roofs at least 4-5 times so far this winter and normally our tractor plows the driveway, but we've had a few technical issues with that, so I've had to get the driveway plowed twice by others. I hope that your snow melts without any flooding issues - we have been getting lots of rain here, and flooding has become the new concern.

  44. I loved your projects, it was a difficult choice but I think the potholder is my favorite!
That sure is some snow, and poor kitty having to share his home with yet another dig, grin.
Hope by now the tractor I'd free, and you're plowed out!
    Blessings!

    1. I really liked the little potholder too, appreciate you sharing your favorite! Yes, we have gotten a lot of snow, but now we are getting lots of rain, and it is quite a mess! We did get the tractor free, thank you for asking! Have a blessed week :)

  45. You did a wonderful job using the fabric you got. The pillow looks so pretty and also the other items. Your sewing machine looks awesome. I am looking into buying a new sewing machine, my is basic and so old. I don't do a lot of sewing now that the kids are grown but would love to have a new machine. Never used a computerized one. Your photos looks so pretty!

    1. Thanks ts Angela! I got the new machine a few years ago after my old one quit working, and I was forced to! I must admit I do miss my old machine, but this one does a nice job too. Finding a new machine and getting used to it is always a bit of work, but nice once you get used to it. Hugs to you today :)

  47. My goodness my friend, that is a lot of snow! Our's has mostly melted off down here and I am very thankful for that. So far I can see that my favorite rose bush has suffered the worst damage and my hubby has said he will replace it if need since he is the one that threw the heavy snow on it while digging out the driveway.

You pillow, potholder, pin cushion and bookmarks are so cute. I just love them. You are so creative. :)

    Be blessed!

  49. Yes, winter has been challenging this year. Our town installed a new water system two years ago and they didn't bury the waterlines deep enough. With two months of sub zero temperatures they've been afraid of broken water lines. This means we've had to keep water running through our bathroom or kitchen faucet 24x7. Even though the town isn't charging the residents for the overage, it does create inconvenience. I'm still staying positive, though. We have sunshine today and the snow is melting. Spring will be even sweeter this year. I love your projects. Patchwork is one of my favorite quilt designs, and your pillow and potholder are delightful. Great use of the scraps for the pin cushion. I'm crazy about those bookmarks. On my way to check out Kelly-Anne's tutorial. Hugs, Nancy

    1. Oh my, that is horrible that the town didn't see the need for deeper water lines! That would be a terrible inconvenience to have to keep your water on. We only do that when it gets very cold here, down in the teens, just to be safe. I hope they rectify the situation come spring!

I do love making those bookmarks, they are so easy to make, and love adding the extra little touches to them.

Hugs to you today Nancy, always appreciate your visit :)

  50. Hi Marilyn! So that's what all the material was for...quilting! What a fun project, and you are so good at getting the sewing just right. The little rose you made was so sweet too.
Thank goodness you don't have to dig out your son's car, what a job that would be! Our winter hasn't been much this year. The lowest snow total in years. I'm not complaining!
    Happy Valentine's Day :)

  51. What an adorable pillow! You are very creative and crafty for utilizing every bit of fabric you have.

I wouldn't be surprised to discover that all that snow brightens up your home, acting as a unique source of natural light!

It's actually been cold, rainy and very windy here, in the village, which is a change from our usual mild and sunny conditions, but I can't complain, especially since I got up extra early to bake up fresh scones. They were perfect with that first cup of steaming hot coffee!

    Happy Valentine's Day, sweetie!

    Hugs,
    Poppy

    1. Thank you Poppy, it was quite exciting to find that I had enough project for the little pin cushion out of the leftover scraps! You are right about the natural light, I love it!

I understand that rainy dreary weather is no fun - we've actually been getting a lot of rain here too, and our snow is slowly melting away, spring is not far off. Your scones sound wonderful! I agree that a fresh hot scone couldn't be better paired with hot coffee in the morning! Hugs to you today dear friend :)
