Springtime Moments and a New Birth

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

We have been having an incredibly beautiful spring here. I hate to say that too much because I know so many of you who are my dear precious readers are just now beginning to have spring weather. Usually our spring is just getting started, but this year, it seems we are a month ahead!

The lupins are already starting to bloom, and the wild roses are just about to bloom out too.  My wild strawberries are full of little berries.  These usually don't come until closer to the end of May. We have had beautiful sunshiny weather, up into the 80s for several weeks, and I've already had to use our window air conditioner a couple of times!  Can you believe it?   Most years we never turn the air conditioner on until July.  We have also gotten lots of rain.  We have had several large rain systems come through with rain that left puddles (which is a lot of rain for us here, as our ground is porous and absorbs moisture very quickly). Needless to say, we are enjoying an amazing spring this year!

I hope you will enjoy the collection of pictures I've taken over the last several days of the springtime moments I've enjoyed over the past week.

Rufous hummingbirds visiting the feeder outside my window

My plants just about ready to go in the garden
Our pine trees don't have good branches, so we used a downed tree to make our own "branch"
for bird feeders and the flowers.

My Prairiefire Crabapple is in bloom... gorgeous is an understatement! We planted it earlier this spring as a bareroot tree.

Seeing these beautiful pink blooms in my very own yard just makes my heart happy!

A butterfly enjoying the sweetness of the crabapple blooms

I'm reading an encyclopedia.... Organic gardening - so much to learn! So don't call me a walking encyclopedia yet! {grin}

A dozen white roses.  See that black rose? It is a metal rose crafted for me by my son for Mother's Day.

A beautiful rose that will never fade!

Some lilacs picked from my neighbor's yard and a peach rose handed to me by a lovely lady driving around handing out flowers to friends on Mother's Day.

Treated to dinner on Mother's day.. enjoyed baked salmon with asparagus and a baked potato... wonderful!

My kids surprised me and brought me a greenhouse for Mother's Day!  I could hardly believe it!

We haven't put it together yet, because the instructions call for a specific foundation for the greenhouse, and that will need to be done properly before it is put together.   My two very special children put their heads, and their hard earned money together to buy me this greenhouse as a surprise for me.  I was incredibly surprised, and thrilled to receive such a special gift from them!  They were as excited as I was, to have surprised and blessed me so.  :)

Around the yard... a silly tomcat perched on top of the car.

The two Eleanors perched on the roost for the night. It amazes me how the chickens separate themselves, and hang out together with their like kind.  I've seen them do it a lot.  They don't have a mirror to know what they look like, lol!  I'll often see the two Eleanors (can't tell them apart) together, as well as the two Martha's (my two Rhode Island reds) hanging out together in the yard, and roosting at night next to each other.

A new birth on the farm!  We let some of our hens sit on eggs fertilized by our one and only Mr. Rudy to see what would happen.  I walked out to the coop today to hear loud chirping, and met this sweet baby chick, just an hour or so old.  We have three other eggs that are still being incubated by our hens, and we are looking forward to meeting them too!

I hope this sweet little one is a she  {smiles}

She just melted my heart, so sweet and precious.  She cuddled into my hand, and quieted her chirping when I held her.

Exciting days for sure... and more work for me, because now the little chicks who have gotten old enough to not need the light and enclosure, are not too happy about being pushed out of their cozy space by the newcomer, and keep trying to get back in.  I've been going out to the coop every hour or so since the little one was born to check on her.  She is alone for now, but hopefully by tomorrow or the next day we will have some other little chicks to join her.  I'll keep you posted :)

  8. Did you receive my comment yesterday? Victoria is going to send me the colors you can choose for the headband. The picture that's on my blog is only for the wallets, she told me. Could you please send me your email address so I can get you in touch with Victoria? Thank you so much. :)
    Sorry for the confusion.Love,

  13. Wow, a green house! Lucky you. Your blooms are lovely to view. I met my husband on his last leave from the Navy while he visited family nearby. I said goodbye to him at the airport as he caught a flight to the east coast. He gave me a beautiful turquoise vase with a single black rose which opened up in time. Very creative I thought and I read a lot into it, of course. His life was dark until he met me!!!!!

    1. Oh how awesome, I love how your analogy worked with the black rose! Mine will never die or fade, and it is so very precious to me. The gift of the greenhouse is one that I will enjoy for many years too, and hopefully we can have an amazing garden because of it this year and years to come. Hoping that your week is a lovely one! The weekend is almost here :)

  14. Love catching up on what's happening at your place. We've had a few warm(80 degree)days, but our weather is up and down. One day rain or snow and then it finally warms up. Hubby and I planted two Lilac bushes and four Burning Bushes yesterday and today.
Thanks for sharing all the babies too. Love your gifts and your dinner.

  18. Hi Marilyn, another lovely post. Every photo you share takes my breath away!
Your Eleanor's are so adorable, and how funny that they like to hang out with their own kind.
What a fabulous Mother's Day gift from your dear children. You are going to love and enjoy that for sure.
We are still experiencing cool weather with moisture, but we're soon going to have warmth. I put our humming bird feeder up this week as we have two so far. More are yet to come. We usually put out 5 to 6 feeders and during the rush we fill them every other day, some every day. It's a job all its own. I do enjoy them so.
Thank you for sharing your beauty with us.
    Enjoy your weekend~

    1. I am always amazed at our chickens, and how funny and unique each of them are. My kids are starting to call me the "chicken whisperer", lol! The greenhouse is proving to be so amazing to have, I'm so excited about it. We have had such a lovely spring here, and I am enjoying every precious moment that I can! Sounds like the hummers certainly keep you busy! I have 6 feeders out, and so far having to change them out about once a week. You are right, it is a job all its own, but enjoyable to watch them!

Praying for you today, as I know this is a day full of memories, sorrow and yet joy for the legacy your father left you. Sending hugs and love to you today and praying your heart is comforted by the Lord!

    1. Yes! A greenhouse, I can hardly believe it! People in the south probably don't understand why a greenhouse can make you so excited, but us folks up here in the north know that a greenhouse makes gardening so much easier, as it helps extend the short growing season that we have. I am having FUN! LOL :) Hope you are having a lovely week so far!

  27. What a beautiful post! I loved seeing all that is going on in your world. :) That was SO sweet and thoughtful for your dear children to buy you the greenhouse! I know you will cherish and use that for years to come....and the rose your son made you! Oh, my! What a dear thing for him to do for you. Such kind-hearted children you have! Sorry it took me a while to make it here, my friend. My computer has started blocking all google blogs from reaching me again. I have no idea what triggers that, but I haven't been getting the emails to know when people post. So frustrating. God bless you with a wonderful night. Sending you much love.

    1. Oh the greenhouse was SUCH a blessing for me, it touched my heart so deeply that my kids went to the effort to get something so nice for me. It will last for a long time, Lord willing. My plants are so much happier already in the natural light, instead of under the grow lights.

I'm sorry that you are having trouble again with google doing such strange things! Oh it is so frustrating when things with the computer go wrong, and no one knows how to fix it! I surely hope that they come up with a fix for the issue. I will pray about it, the Lord is able to provide a solution! :) Praying for you my dear friend, as I know this is a trying difficult time for you. Your family is always in our prayers! Hugs and love sent to you today :)

    1. I too was very happy with the way the downed tree worked perfectly for a natural hanger for our bird feeders and plants. I think I may try to create more of them in the yard. I can't have plants on the ground because of the chickens, who decimate them, lol! I have been busy outside this time of year, it is always so busy, and then so nice to have the beautiful spring we've had! Hope you are having a lovely spring down there. Will look forward to visiting with you by email soon :) Many hugs!
