Thanksgiving Blessings

Sunday, November 27, 2016

Thanksgiving was a sweetly blessed time this year.  Dear friends of ours invited us to their home for to celebrate Thanksgiving with them for the first time in their new home.

The table was lovingly set with china passed down from her grandmother's collection.

All the abundance of food for our family included the traditional Thanksgiving favorites.  She made homemade sourdough rolls, and fresh homemade butter too!

A true feast of thanksgiving, with happily stuffed bellies!

But I think the one who enjoyed the meal most was our friends' daughter who upon finishing all the food on her plate, thought she could do better by licking the plate clean.

Is there any better thanks for a Thanksgiving meal than this? {smiles}

After dinner we went outside to stretch our legs and do a little practice shooting at their outdoor shooting range.  All of us got to try our hand at the target practice!  Afterwards we came back inside for hot cocoa or tea around their cozily blazing wood fire, and we enjoyed a lovely evening of good fellowship, and a blessed time together.

Since I cooked the turkey for the meal, after carving it I placed the bones back in my grandmother's roaster, and added a couple of teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, and slowly simmered the bones covered in water for about 24 hours on the stove top.

16 cups of rich turkey bone broth ready to go into bottles.

This amazing bone broth is full of flavor, and packed with nutrients.  My family has made bone broth long before it became popular to do so.  I remember my mother using this same roasting pan and cooking the bones in water overnight and then making soup out of the bones.  Amazing isn't it, how family traditions that our family always enjoyed and never even realized the health benefits to it!  Now that it has become quite popular to make bone broth (visit this website here to read more about the benefits of bone broth), I take joy in continuing in the tradition that that our family has been doing for many, many years.

One of our family's favorite meals after Thanksgiving is turkey soup, made with this bone broth.

It is just a simple soup, chock full of potatoes, carrots, corn, and broccoli with just a bit of salt and pepper needed to round out the flavor.  Served up with a platter of my iron skillet biscuits,  the joy of Thanksgiving continues to bless our tummies for another meal or two!

  8. Hi Marilyn! Sure sounds like a lovely Thanksgiving. It's always fun with children too, such a cute photo of 'licking the plate clean'.
My daughter and her family just left yesterday after a long weekend to celebrate Thanksgiving with us. It was high-energy that's for sure, with three children under five. We are very blessed.

  9. Your lovely photos are making me hungry. But I am intrigued. What are those blue and red pins on a board? They look like the little cups on which one places the golf ball before hitting it with a stick !!!

God bless you and your family.

    1. Those red and blue pins are a little tic-tac-toe kind of game. You can find these little wooden games at many restaurants here in America as a kind of easy passtime while waiting for your food to arrive. The goal is to jump the pins until you hopefully only have 1-2 left. The more you have left, the higher the point you get, and the goal is to get the lowest score. Hope you can understand this description, lol! The little pins do look like golf tees, very true! Here is a link for you to see what they look like a bit closer: http://www.officeplayground.com/peg-game-p1691.html?gclid=Cj0KEQiA4JnCBRDQ5be3nKCPhpwBEiQAjwN1bpuoasBPnG493SPSpeULDrDEXslsZTAA4Q4gnSZXq5kaArLI8P8HAQ Hope this helps! Have a wonderful day!

  10. Haha! I love that plate licking little girl! If that is not the picture of joy at the end of meal, I don't know what is. Your soup looks delicious....nothing better than leftover turkey...anything! :)

    1. I agree, the leftovers with turkey are the best! I have made two big pots of turkey soup so far, and will probably get one more out of the frozen broth and turkey leftovers one day soon. So awesome, I agree! :)

  11. Sounds like you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! And that precious little girl enjoying every morsel off her plate! So very cute. We enjoyed ours as well. Very cozy and simple. I just finished off our leftovers, so I guess now I need to cook something for dinner without turkey! Ha!
Slowly decorating for Christmas and we will be decorating the tree this weekend! Yay!
I'm going to savor each day this holiday season!

I love the idea of your turkey broth and canning it. I never thought to do that, just freeze it.

In the winter I put fake flowers in it and I know how these items are a wonderful reminder of just how special they were. I hope your Christmas preparations are coming along nicely....
