Fall Adventures

Monday, October 16, 2017

This has been a particularly lovely year for Fall colors.  I have a few special spots that I like to go to each Fall to see the glorious colors of the season.  Year after year, I never tire of seeing these Fall colors. While we don't have as many of the vibrant colors like the Northeast, our trees and shrubs still manage to put on a gorgeous display this time of year. There are an abundance of pictures, so grab a teacup or your coffee cup and settle in for some northwest Fall colors :)

Two geese swimming in sparkling waters

A favorite view of mine, the still waters a reflection of color.

Cool skies overshadowing the yellowed grasses.

Hiking the short trail down to the river.

The reds and oranges of the maple trees backdropped by the purple mountains.

An old railroad bridge framed by the brilliance of the maples.

A late afternoon break in the clouds brought sunshine's warmth to the river.

A cloudy day turned glorious with a burst of sunshine in late afternoon.

A closer look at the railroad bridge

An elderberry tree

A lovely spot to sit down by the river

A beautiful ending to the day

The colors of this sunset were magnificent, and after the cloudy day,
the brilliance of the sunset was wonderful to see.

A favorite place of mine to visit in fall.  Once again, this little place of business has failed to remain open,
and is now deserted again. It was last a pizza parlor.

I think a cozy little sandwich/coffee shop would be a much better fit here.
So much character in this building and location.

On another afternoon, the rainstorm passed just at dusk and left this moody scene.

A home across the river was having a bonfire just as evening shadows were falling.

The road that leads to our home, decked out in fall brilliance.

Sunsets in Fall are magnificent.

A quaint little spot to have a picnic lunch!

Rocks adorned with the offerings of the nearby maple tree.

Walking in fallen maple leaves...

Rose hips now fully ripe, bursting forth in reddish delight, adding to Fall's color mix.

We found a wild apple tree along the train tracks, with fallen ripe apples covering the ground.

We picked as many as we could, filling all our pockets with them.

What a delightful treat they were too, firm, sweet, and yet tart.

The railroad bridge at sunset.

A late afternoon storm left behind this radiant rainbow in the skies.

Rich colors of fall abound on every corner.

I will be having my second carpal tunnel surgery this coming Thursday on my left hand. I know a little more what to expect, and yet I wonder what it will be like to have two hands that are weak and unable to do simple things.  Should be interesting!  I can already tell a difference in my right hand, with no pain, numbness or tingling any longer and it is already so worth it to me to have the surgeries done.  My family and friends have been such a blessing to me through it all.

My son showed me a neat "trick" that has allowed me to keep in touch with friends and family throughout this time, since I can't type.  On my smartphone, on the little keyboard where you type your message, beside the space bar, there is a little microphone.  If you tap that microphone, it allows you to dictate your text message.  It is called Google Speak.  I've found it to be remarkably accurate, and it allows me to dictate my text messages and even do my blog posts for me.  However, I do have to edit the message, because there are many words it gets confused on, lol! But at least it does most of the work for me, without me having to text with one finger!

It may be a week or two before I get another blog post out, with two hands not able to do much. However I hope that with the quick healing that I've experienced with my right hand, that it will be the same with my left hand. My Dad is healing well from his surgery as well, and so we are just very thankful for all the many blessings of the Lord, and His great care of us.

Our hearts continue to lift in prayer for those who have been affected by the hurricanes, floods, shootings, and fires, so much sadness and tragedy on every hand, and it reminds me that the little things in life (such as my hand surgeries), are nothing compared to the heartaches and loss that so many have faced this year.

So thankful that our trust in the Lord remains a foundation and a pillar of strength for us. May the blessings of the Lord abound in your life, and may His strength and joy become yours each day.

  1. Marilyn, These are some of the prettiest pictures of autumn I have seen this year. It's too green here, draught has made the leaves just curl and fall...not much color. Your fiery sunset is awesome. I love sun and sky shots. Praying your surgery goes well and your recover quickly. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
p.s. found you at Nana Diana's. blog.

  2. What a glorious post, Marilyn! At this moment your fall colors are much lovelier and more vibrant than what we are seeing here in New Hampshire. Oh, they are pretty but not as nice as usual. I think it's because our autumn temperatures have been so warm. We have not had a real frost yet here in our area.

Will be praying for your second surgery and trusting it will go as well and yield as successful a result as the first!

  3. So glad you're having your wrists done before there's permanent damage. I've had both wrists done, both thumbs, and two fingers on one hand. Plus the top of my right wrist for "trigger wrist." Never regretted any of them and never had a problem and it's been years and years.

As usual your photos are wonderful. You have the eye of an artist.

  4. The glorious autumn is one of my favourite times of year, Marilyn. You showed it in all that glory, that's for sure.

I am glad your dad is recovering nicely. Good luck with the second surgery.

  5. Marilyn, you have done a marvelous job on this post with google speak! I hope your hand heals quickly and thoroughly. I have to wear braces on both hands if typing very much so I try to guard against it coming to surgery.

But you thought the colors in your region couldn't compare to the North East? My word, you live in an autumn paradise! I thoroughly enjoyed each picture as we don't seem to even begin to reach our peak here in Nashville area until the end of the month or even the first week in November. I hope you have been able to spend lots of time outdoors soaking in the beauty. I plan to do that soon!

  8. Marilyn, I'll be praying for your surgery. Maybe after you get a chance to heal a little bit we can meet up before the snow flies! Your photos are just gorgeous. I love the northwest in the fall too. Dennis had a vacation day today so we took a drive up to Trail, BC for lunch. It was so beautiful. The drive along the Columbia River was so colorful.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  14. Marilyn, your photos of fall took my breath away! Here in the south, we're still waiting for leaves to change, though some have taken the liberty to drop before the colors have set in.
So glad your right hand is doing better; I'll be praying for your upcoming surgery on the left one!
    Blessings!

  17. Oh, I meant to tell you...I think you should open that little, quaint coffee and sandwich shop! YOU would be an amazing host/owner of a little place like that...just look at how beautiful and sweet your garden tea parties are...you would bring all of that to the little shop, and people would feel so welcome and warm and loved! Just a thought I had!!! :)

    1. I'll Cheryl you are too kind! I know I would love to own a place like that but unless that the Lord would open the doors it would not ever be possible. I'm content to pray that someone will open a quaint little place there instead! You are such a precious friend and I appreciate your friendship so much! Big hugs and much love to you today!

  24. Breathtaking photos, lovely Marilyn. All those glorious Fall hues are a delight to the eye. Love that 'little' home by the river. I did not know about Google Speak; I must try it. Modern technologies are amazing. How wonderful your hand operation was successful and how how wonderful your dad is on the road to recovery. All the best for your second operation. Thinking of you and praying that all goes well, from way down here at the bottom of the world. Xx

  25. What can I say? I repeat what everyone else said! GORGEOUS photos... for such a gorgeous area! It is surely one of God's most favorite places! I pray your next surgery will go well and that both wrists and hands will heal up totally. At least you can still hold a camera! All of your photos are so wonderful, with the eye of an artist, as one gal said. I love the sunsets by the old RR bridge.. just brilliant.. and the apples on the ground (yum.. I ate one the other day on a walk I took.. saw an old tree that had dropped most and they were just laying there - I hate seeing them go to waste). You do have stunning colors there! Here where I live, there is very little color. Most of the trees are non-color trees.. the leaves just die and drop off.. we've been having nights at around 22-26 degrees so they just die. There are a few maples down the block that are a vivid red, so I walk there to take in their beauty. I do miss living in SW Washington as the colors there were absolutely wonderful.. as is a drive to the coast from there. I'll have to delight in this time of year through your photos! Good luck Thursday, and glad your dad is doing well. Hugs.. Marilyn

  26. Beautiful post and I agree the fall colors are wonderful this year. So glad the healing of your right hand is coming along and praying right now that all goes well with your second surgery. That is encouraging to me as I think I'll have the same thing in the next few months. My son always uses google speak for his text messages. I should get the hang of it, too. The wind is blowing here in Northeastern Washington and I'm thinking the rains should come soon, too. Happy Tuesday to you!
