Glass Flower Plate Tutorial

Wednesday, October 10, 2018

Shortly after we moved to our current home several years ago, a neighbor invited me over for tea.  As we got acquainted over tea, and she showed me her garden area, I was especially intrigued with the gorgeous glass plate flowers that she had created and had placed all throughout her garden areas.  It wasn't until this summer that she was able to show me her craft, and how to put the plates together.  I had previously watched many videos on it, but there is nothing like hands-on to learn for yourself.

So I thought I would do a post on just the glass plate flowers themselves.  I have included pictures of most of the plates I have made this summer.  At the end of the pictures that I will share below, I have included a video on my process of making the plates if you are interested.  I make the plates outside, and there are plenty of "country noise effects" throughout my video, lol!

I won't narrate below each picture below, you can just scroll through and enjoy :)

I've had quite a few people ask me how to make these plates, and so here is a short video tutorial for you to watch if you are interested in how they are made.  It is an easy process, but there is some work that goes into gathering everything you need to make the flower.  This was my first attempt at narrating a video tutorial, while holding my camera in my hand, so bear with me in this, lol!

I hope you enjoyed the video, and if you love china as much as I do, this may be a fun way to display plates and china that otherwise would be hiding in a cabinet.  These plates have brought a lot of joy and whimsey to my garden this year.  I have also used a lot of cracked china that otherwise could not be enjoyed, yet these pieces can live on in the beauty of my garden despite their broken, chipped state.

As I use these beautiful pieces of china, I don't feel so bad cutting into a plate that is already chipped or otherwise marred, as I give it new life. This is a beautiful analogy too, just as the Lord can take our chipped, broken, marred and scarred life and under His gentle handiwork and care, use us for something new and wonderful again.  There is no end to the enduring creative love of the Lord, and the purpose He has for our lives.  He is the Great Potter, and under His hands, and in His care, we can be made into something new again, to further benefit His kingdom.

But now, O Lord
you are our Father;
we are the clay,
and you are our potter
we are all the work of your hand.
Isaiah 64:8

I love thinking of that analogy as I take these cast-off plates, teacups, saucers, candleholders, ashtrays, and custard cups among others... and turn them into something new and beautiful, to be enjoyed.

Blessings to all who have visited here and shared in this joy of mine today :)

  6. Oh, WOW!!!!! This is just so beautiful!! I have never seen anything like this! It adds so much to your already amazing garden area, and they are so unique! I loved the spiritual thoughts you shared along with this and was thinking how just as each of these plate creations are totally unique, so are all of God's children. There is no other plate creation just like yours anywhere in the world, and there is no one else like any one of us. The Master Creator gives each of us our own, individual qualities, and He creates each of us with such care and love. This post was such a joy to share, and I loved being able to watch the tutorial. You did an excellent job! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this and for your patience in teaching us how to make these. God has gifted you with so many bountiful gifts, and you are a treasure, dear friend. Sending much love and hugs and many blessings to you tonight!

  10. Oh, I love these. I have a couple of them in my garden that we bought from a lady at our local flea market. Hers are mostly made with clear glass plates rather than the china, but I like your idea of using the china plates as well. I am going to save this as I may have a lot of dishes to do something like this with in the future when we move and "downsize". A great way to save the dishes that I otherwise may have just given away to a thrift store or something. Thank you for sharing this.

  11. Wow, Marilyn, I'm absolutely blown away by how beautiful your creations are! And yes, a great analogy about how God can take our chipped and broken selves and turn it into something beautiful. Blessings, my friend!

  12. Marilyn, you are a rock star! These darling plate flowers are so adorable and fun...it makes me want to go raid my china cabinet! You did a fabulous job on your video tutorial and it was so fun to put a voice with your beautiful face. I love every one of them and they certainly add whimsy to any space. Oh but the icing on the cake is the analogy you used about how the Lord uses us, His broken and battered vessels, and gives us new life through Him. Praise His name! Thanks so much for sharing this. HUGS!

  15. Marilyn, Thank you for posting the video! I was wondering how you made these gorgeous 'flowers'. Ever since you shared the first one, I have been enthralled with them. I was even telling a friend about them the other day. I definitely need to get me a diamond drill bit for some of my teacup bird feeders. I use the E6000 but it takes soooo long to set. Have a blessed day, my friend! {{hugs}}

  18. Absolutely gorgeous Marilyn! The yellow one with the pretty basket knob, oh my! I've seen these plate flowers before and have always loved them. I always thought one day I would try to make my own. It's a good use for those single plates you often find in the thrift stores. I'm off to watch your video. Nice to have found your blog.

  19. These are all so cute! My favorite is the one made from the medal strainer or steaming basket with the cute little basket knob in the center. I also love that your neighbor invited you over for a tea party. That's a lovely idea and way to welcome you to the neighborhood. When our daughter was going to nursing school she moved to a small town in Oregon and purchased a little house. The realtor told her that when she got moved in to give her a call, because she always liked coming back and putting on a front yard ice cream social as a way to help them meet all their neighbors. It's so important to feel welcome in a new place :) Again about your flowers . . . I absolutely love repurposed crafts ad these are delightful . . . such a sweet way to add whimsy to a garden :)
    Wishing you a lovely day.

  20. Thank you for taking the time to explain ( and show) how to make these lovely glass flowers.
    I tried making 3 very simple ones this Spring using silicone as my glue but by now 2 out of 3 have fallen. The silicone didn't hold. I will show this video to my dh and see if he can help me.

  23. I have never before seen this kind of craft.It really is very pretty. I especially like your analogy to the life of a person.God can even ,make something beautiful out of damaged pieces, and people, just like me.

  24. What a joy to visit you today and watch the video, a real delight to learn something new and see so much beauty. It is certainly a raft that I will be giving a go once I have collected up some appropriate plates and such.

  25. These are such a great idea! I had never seen any plate flowers before and really love them. What a great way to have an excuse to go buy more plates! I LOVE decorative plates but don't usually buy them as I have nowhere to put them. I still have MANY MANY china plates that were my mom's and aunt's that they bought all over the US and Europe. The red one with the scalloped plate is my most favorite! Each one is so charming and different.. and what a great use for the pretty egg plate! I forgot you had done a few videos so went to YouTube and watched this one plus some of your others. You did a great job and was so nice to hear your voice and (almost) see you (at least saw your feet!). Was fun hearing the chickens and chain saw... for a moment I felt like I was up in your wonderful part of the world! How in the heck did you find the time to make these when you were SO busy all summer???? It beats me..... hugs.. thank you so much for sharing your corner of the world. xoxoxo Marilyn J

  38. I love your analogy of the cracked plates and our own fallen state. Where would we be without the loving hands of the potter to keep us together? I made a few plate flowers a few years ago, for myself and gifts. Yours are so much more creative than mine were. It was a fun project. I LOVE the flower in the first picture!
