The Fire over the Ridge

Monday, August 23, 2021

In my last post, I mentioned that there was a fire that started just over the ridge from our home.  I wanted to share a few more pictures and stories about the fire that thankfully has been just about completely contained, but in the beginning, we did not know how it would go.

Dan had just called me to say that he saw smoke as he was driving through town, and it looked like it was close to us. He was about 15 minutes away.  Then I got a text from my neighbor asking me if I'd seen the fire.

I went down to the neighbor's home where we had a better view of the fire. This was shortly after the fire began, and we stood there and watched it grow. We prayed together that the fire would not come our direction, and that no lives or property would be lost. God answered that prayer!

Soon, I returned home to gather things together, just in case.
This was the view of the fire from our driveway.

Within an hour, the fire had doubled in size, and we learned that the fire district had called in an emergency and the fire became top priority. Soon, airplanes and helicopters were circling around the fire, dropping fire retardant and water from the nearby rivers.

From the bridge in our little town, the fire towered over the horizon.

We drove to town to find out more about the fire, and to see what direction they were anticipating it to go. Thankfully, for us, we learned that the fire was headed east, away from us.  There were evacuations in place for many people, and we saw many horse trailers and RVs being pulled as they evacuated away from the fire.

The local Junior High with a plume of smoke behind it. The fire was only 2-3 miles away.

From all angles, the fire was now visible, and there was an air of tension and anxiety in our little town, as we all were very concerned about how fast this fire grew.

The fire's reflection in the cab window of our pickup.

For several days, nonstop it seemed, helicopters and airplanes flew overhead delivering their precious cargo of water and fire retardant.

Soon the smoke from this fire and other fires from other states
and Canada filled our air with heavy smoky haze.

I've heard that many of you have also had the smoke from these fires come to your area, so many of you may understand just how strange the skies feel with the heavy smoke.

I am thankful to report that within a week the Pioneer fire was 100% contained, and all those who were evacuated from their homes were able to return. There was no loss of homes or structures, and we are grateful beyond words to the incredible teams of firefighters, airplane and helicopter pilots, and local loggers and heavy equipment operators who all fought this fire so valiantly!

Over the last week or so, we have begun to receive rain showers occasionally, and last night some areas received almost 3/4" of rain, which is a LOT of rain, considering we probably haven't had that much rain in one month since April, let alone overnight, along with other rainfalls that have come sporadically. I know the Lord is answering our prayers for more rain! Our temps today were in the low 70s, a welcome break from the heat as well. Our fire danger here still remains extreme, but we are thankful for the relief of the last few days in the form of rain and cooler temperatures.

My garden continues to thrive and harvest season is upon me now! I have spent several days canning pickles and putting up veggies from the garden.  It is such a good feeling to be able to put food away for those long winter days ahead of us! The garden is very happy to have the rain, and I look forward to the great harvest after this very long and difficult year with our extreme heat and then smoky skies. Every bit of food I can gather out of my garden, I am now busy putting up. It's a busy time of year, but a great feeling to enjoy the harvest!

  1. I'm so thankful that the fire was contained and no homes were burned. This is such a dreadful year for fires and in northern BC the fires burn on. The smoke has cleared here and we've had a few showers. We need more but hopefully that will happen.

  6. Oh Marilyn... so glad your prayers were answered and the fire was contained and controlled. It was way too close for comfort. I'm glad you are getting some rain. We have had NONE here in central Oregon and it is SO SO SO SO DRY and arid. I'm always on edge wondering if/when a new fire will start close by. I pray every day for rain! Our beautiful forests are being destroyed and sometimes I don't understand why this has to happen to our wonderful land and forests. It makes me eternally sad. I'm glad you are safe. Take care.. hugs.. Marilyn

  7. To have a fire that close must be somewhat scary. I know we trust in God, but since we are human, those other emotions also come in. Glad you were spared.

  8. This has been a very active fire season in our province, as well (BC), with complete towns being destroyed. I'm so glad that the fire is contained there now. We are praying for rain here on the Island as we have had no measurable rain for such a long time.

  10. Hello Marilyn! I was so glad to read that the fire turned away from you and is now contained. I believe the one near Loon Lake is also more controlled because of the cooler weather and rain. I am so looking forward to flying into Spokane Wednesday. Friends have told me that it's cooled off somewhat. Anything has to be better than here. At 10:00 tonight it was still "feels like" temperature of 107F. The humidity is ridiculously high and has been all summer. Such crazy weather this year everywhere.
Your garden harvest looks wonderful. I would love to have green beans to blanch and freeze. Maybe next year, although I can't imagine working in the garden in the extreme heat here.
    Take care my friend.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  14. Seeing smoke and fire like that is unsettling. You and your neighbor did the very best thing when you prayed together.

The last beautiful picture of produce in the basket is back to normal. Don't forget to take pics of the canning.

  16. I'm so glad that the Lord has protected you and your home and the homes of others around you. Fires are scary especially when they threaten lives and homes.
Your garden is giving you some wonderful treasures! I'm sure you are enjoying putting some of that goodness up for the winter. Bringing produce in from the garden always makes my heart smile. Praying you have a beautiful day!

  17. Oh, dear friend! This is just awful! I can't imagine how scary it was to see that smoke billowing so close to your home. Well, I can imagine, come to think of it because we had this same thing happen one time when we lived in FL. I remember standing at the end of our driveway praying with all my might and speaking a rebuke against that raging fire. God let it come very close, but He kept it at bay, praise His holy name! He is so faithful. It reminds me of where it talks in the Bible about how He puts the boundaries in place for the sea and its proud waves must be stayed at a certain point. I am so thankful God sets the boundaries in our lives, too, and He protects what is His. I am so very thankful you and all your possessions are safe in His tender care. Sending much love and hugs to you today!

  20. I'm so glad your story had a happy ending. That must have been very unnerving to see and wait. During our many years in Denver, we experienced smoky skies as you described along with the orange ball of a sun and thick air we didn't want in our lungs.

Thanks be to the Lord for this outcome!
