August - the Month with No Holiday

Saturday, August 16, 2025

Did you realize that August is the one month out of the year - for the United States at least - that has no national holiday? It has no special connotation associated with it, unlike other months. February is the month of Love, July is the month of Patriotism, October is the month of Pumpkins, November is the month of Thanksgiving, and December is the month of Christmas.  Poor August! No special holiday for this month. Speaking for myself, I think August is a month of preparation.

  • I think of kids preparing for and going back to school and college students starting their semesters.
  • It is a month when animals and insects desperately begin to get ready for winter.  The wasps become mean and angry in August.  Flies invade our home every time the door opens.  Mice begin to visit and explore nesting places for the winter.  There is a slight tinge of color now to the leaves of the trees as they prepare for their colorful transition.
  • It is a season where harvest begins, and each day, beautiful veggies come in from the garden to be eaten or put up for winter.
  • August can be very hot and dry, and here in North Idaho, the air can be filled with smoke. Thankfully, we haven't had many smoky days here, but there are fires around us.
  • It is the season for grasshoppers to take over and buzz around on the hot, dry ground.
  • 4H county fairs are taking place in late August, as children have prepared all year to show their animals and creations.
Indeed, perhaps you agree with me that August is a month of preparation. Of Getting Ready. For WINTER is indeed coming.  But before Winter - we have FALL to look forward to! I love the season of Fall, and look forward to the brilliant plumes of color we enjoy here in September and October.

We had a taste of Fall in early August, where our temperatures dipped down into the high 30s one night, and the next morning, the air was cool, and fog shimmered over the horizon.

An early morning walk with Riley was crisp and a tad on the side of chilly!

40s in the morning are unusual even for us here in North Idaho in August. Our typical temperatures are high 50s and 60s in the mornings.

We've had some beautiful skies at sunset!

The August Moon danced in the silvery clouds before winking goodnight...

The swallows have been gentle and graceful visitors for the summer, and are now readying for their flight south after raising their young here.

Summer's end is at hand, time to fly south!

More beautiful August skylines.

We visited our local county fair this past week to see all the amazing creations!

Always love walking through the animal barns and seeing the children who take care of their animals with such pride.

Danielle, Danika, Alanna, and I enjoyed walking around looking at all the animals and the displays!

Some really beautiful creations!

I spent some time in my She Shed just enjoying the beauty within and without. Sometimes it is good to just sit and soak in the quiet and peace around you! I find it hard to sit in my garden, because I always see a weed that needs pulled, or something that needs done. {smiles}So my She Shed is a little sanctuary where I can sit and enjoy the beauty without feeling the need to be busy.

My garden at sunset - one of my very favorite times of day, when the sun begins to fall captive to night's curtains, and its blanket of colors spreads warmth across the skies.

So much to love about August - don't you think? Even though it can be a difficult month in some ways, I still find much to love about this month - and it is passing along so quickly. I am trying to make the most of every single day and enjoy whatever each day offers.  We are not promised tomorrow, so our breaths today, our thoughts today are important.

And while difficult circumstances come to us all, there is something to be enjoyed in the simple moments of life.

The Northern Lights made a faint appearance one night this month!

  • Step outside and watch the sunset until the curtains of darkness close.
  • Stop to smell the flowers and soak in the beauty they offer your soul.
  • Watch a bird flutter and fly, and take note of its beautiful coloring.
  • Savor the fare from a farmer's market or your garden and give thanks to the Lord above for providing its bounty.
Yes - these are things we can enjoy in August - while it is a month of preparation, of scurry and hurry, we can find time to stop and enjoy the beauty around us.

Enjoy the latest video I've made using the sunset photos from a few nights ago. I stood outside and just watched the clouds and the sun as their wardrobe changed moment by moment. There were worries in my heart, but I set those aside and soaked up the beauty in the skies instead. I thought of the song, "It is Well With My Soul," and so I used that song paired with the pictures I took to create this video. I pray it will be a blessing to you.

May the peace of God rest with you :)

  2. As the month progresses, one can see the changes in vegetation. In another month, autumn colour will be evident but the green glo is fading already. There is much to enjoy still however. The glorious colours of autumn await.

  5. Lovely post, the She Shed would be a lovely place to just sit down and think, smiles. No cooler mornings here in Florida, not until like December, smiles. Wishing you a beautiful Sunday.

  7. Hello Marilyn, You've found wonderful things to enjoy about August. It's our month with the most birthdays. Brother, brother-in-law, two of my children, and my grandbaby. It's a month of celebration.
It's also hot, but I thank God for air conditioning!
Tomorrow's the first day of school. I'm hobbling on a sore foot, so it will be at least a couple more weeks for me. I plan to sew as much as I can!
    Be blessed,
    Laura

  8. Marilyn, I so enjoy when you show pictures of the lovely surroundings of northern Idaho. First, that foggy dirt road is so pretty. And the August skies are wonderful. Your she shed is charming, and what a nice place for you to spend time alone away from the noise. You have so many cute items on your white dresser. The county fair sounds fun, and I've always loved the fairs and craft markets. August does have many beauties to see, doesn't it? My son just told me recently to enjoy it while it's here, as we can get pretty cold winters. Your list was delightful mentioning all the things to appreciate in August.

    Have a blessed week, Marilyn.

  9. It is amazing how fast this summer has gone, the kids are already back to school, it is still very HOT here, we have had many heat warnings this summer, I do look forward to cooler temps and the pretty colors that fall gives us. Beautiful sunset you shared and how fun to have enjoyed the fair, we haven't gone in a few years. Your garden looks great!

  11. I know August is the month of preparation, but it still seems alot like "summer" to me! I hang onto it as much as I can, and don't want to even think about or prepare for winter yet! In fact, I'm just tomorrow getting my air conditioner put in my window! Hee Hee.. yes we will probably still get some 90 degree weather here through at least the end of September. My few veggies are just now coming on strong, so I need to "prepare" those for freezing or something! And I'll need to prepare the blackberries I pick for jam or freezing.... and will have to prepare the Fall apples from my son's yeard so I can make applesauce. Leaves are just starting to turn here, which makes me a little sad, because I still want summer to hang on a few weeks longer! such beautiful photos you always have! Hugs.. Marilyn

  14. Well said Marilyn. August is the time to prepare. We do see in each year. There is a touch of fall in the air this week, which is very unusual in August. Enjoy. Many blessings.

  15. Interesting about August in the USA being without a holiday or label. :) So true. Our family had memorable weddings in August so that will be the crown of August for us. Beautiful views from your property, as always. Our Fair is this coming week starting on Thursday. Our oldest and his bride will be here and we'll get a chance to celebrate their 24th anniversary while they are here. I'm sure you will be enjoying the bounty from your garden for months to come. Take care!

  16. Hi, August is my second favorite month. I love, love the month of August. My dad's birthday is August 18th. I wanted to get married in the month of August, but we decided on May because my husband was graduating college and moving back to Wisconsin. We wanted to start our life together, so May it was. :-)
Enjoy the last days of summer.

  17. You've perfectly articulated what August feels like. The idea of it being a month of "preparation" is so fitting, a transitional period where you can feel the shift in the air, both literally and figuratively, as nature and people get ready for the change of seasons. It's a month that doesn't demand your attention with a big holiday but instead invites you to slow down and observe. Your photos are lovely, and it's clear you've found the beauty in those subtle moments, from the early morning chill to the stunning sunsets. I especially appreciate the thought about your "She Shed", it’s so true that sometimes the hardest part of enjoying a space is learning to just be in it without feeling the need to be productive.

  19. It has been a bit since I have popped in. Oh...your images are beautiful. I also can't imagine after days of 100 plus degree temps and the mornings soaking humid hot how nice it would be to have 40's to wake up to. I am ready for that day!!!! But like all things we must embrace the season we are in. Blessings.

  20. Thanks for the beautiful video, Marilyn. I love seeing August roll around as I know that fall isn't far behind. This has been an exceptional summer as far as the weather is concerned. It is fair time around here too and that is always a beautiful time. Hope you enjoy the remainder of summer and have a wonderful fall to look forward to...xxoJudy

  21. I agree that there is so many wonderful things to enjoy in August. The beautiful cooler mornings and some spectacular sunsets! It's always a little sad for me though because the cicadas start their songs and that signals summer's end to me. This summer has been a particularly good one for us (although hot!) so I hate to see it end! Thanks for your beautiful post and pictures!

  22. August is flying by and yes, it's a month of preparation. What a great way to describe it. I feel as if my fall prep has been cut short, since on Sunday the temps were in the 90s and by Monday morning they dipped to the 70s and seem content to stay there. I adore summer and am sad to see it go, but it is what it is and I'm trying to enjoy the beauty of these last few days of August! Love the fair pictures...xo

  24. Thanks for visiting my blog. I've never been to Idaho so its nice to see some photos from your beautiful state. We've been in a drought here in Eastern Canada. Very hard on flowers and gardens.
I like your She Shed. A lovely place to relax and as you say, we tend to pull weeds if we sit outside.I can relate to that. Best wishes, Thelma.
