The last three months since Dan's heart attack have been filled with doctor's visits, travel to Cardiac Rehab, and doing all we can to get as healthy as possible, together. All of this work was in anticipation of a required test (an echocardiogram) that would determine if Dan could go back to work.
Because of the need of an IMPELLA device to save his life after the heart attack, it took him a lot longer to recover. The IMPELLA device chews up the body's red blood cells while it is pumping blood, and it takes the body 3 months to replace those red blood cells. So for the first two months, Dan was quite weak, and his blood pressure remained low, as did his energy levels.
Around the end of the second month, we began to notice a dramatic improvement in his energy and blood pressure, and began to feel more confident that when it came time for this test, he would get a passing result.
We praise God that he not only got a passing result, but was only 3 percentage points away from his heart pumping completely normally! He needed an ejection fraction of 40% to maintain his CDL license to drive a semi-truck. Normal ejection fractions are 55-65%. We are praising God that his ejection fraction came in at 52%!! Isn't that incredible! We were so thrilled, and so were the doctors! In fact, he had a scheduled appointment to come in and discuss the echo, but they cancelled it. Imagine - a doctor canceling an appointment! Yes, no need to come in - we will see you back at the 6-month mark. Praise God!
So Dan returned to work this week! He is learning to listen to his body's cues and not push himself so hard. This is hard for all of us - but especially for men! He now carries aspirin and nitroglycerine with him always, and knows to stay hydrated, take things slower, and be more in tune with the needs of his body.
We give praise and glory to the Lord for this miraculous turnaround in his health, and thank each one of you for all your prayers in this journey!
We also give thanks to the Cardiac Rehab team for this success, with all the excellent information that we received, where he learned how to care for his body, and pay attention to its signals.
In an upcoming post, I want to share some of the things that we have learned in Cardiac Rehab and pass them on to you. Perhaps it could save your life, or a loved one's life! Heart disease is the LEADING cause of death in our country. Much heart disease can be prevented with lifestyle and dietary changes. We learned that Dan's heart disease was genetic, but still, there are many things that we can do to keep our bodies healthy and strong as we age.

| It has been pretty cold here, but nowhere near as cold as many other places in the US. We are grateful for the wood stove and the heat it provides! |

| We've been enjoying my hot cacao and chicory drink. While being really simple to make and tastes delicious, it provides incredible anti-inflammatory benefits for your body! Here is the simple recipe: |
Hot Chicory Cacao Drink
|
1 Tbsp organic cacao powder 1 Tbsp powdered instant chicory 1 Tbsp creamer or milk of choice Sweetener to taste (I use 1 dropper of Stevia Sweet Drops) 2 cups hot water (not boiling) Add the cacao powder and chicory to a large mug. Stir in the creamer until the cacao is mostly dissolved. Slowly pour in the hot water, stirring well. Sweeten to taste and enjoy. Rich, smooth, and deeply satisfying, this drink is better than hot chocolate—I promise. It makes a wonderful coffee replacement in the morning or a gentle afternoon pick-me-up without the jitters. Drink to your health! CACAO POWDER BENEFITS Why use cacao powder instead of cocoa powder? Cacao powder in its raw form is most beneficial (which is why you don't bake with it; use it only in smoothies or with hot water).

CHICORY ROOT BENEFITS
Chicory root is a powerful source of inulin, a natural prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria and supports digestive health. Inulin helps improve bowel regularity, enhances mineral absorption, and supports a healthy immune system. Chicory root may aid blood sugar balance by slowing glucose absorption and improving insulin sensitivity. It also supports liver health and gentle detoxification. Naturally caffeine-free, chicory root is often used as a coffee substitute while still promoting mental clarity. Together, chicory root and inulin contribute to better gut health, reduced inflammation, heart health support, and overall metabolic wellness when included in a balanced diet.

In this season of rejoicing that Dan has been able to return to work, my heart cries out to the Lord for mercy on those who are suffering with unbearable needs that seem insurmountable. Every time the news reports share another alarming headline, it can be easy to feel hopeless as you hurt for those who suffer.
It is in these times that I step outside, and I look up. I look up to the mountains. The mountains cannot help me. But the mountains remind me that the Lord is steadfast, He is near, and He has always been close. The mountains remind us of steadfastness, being resolute, and remaining calm in the midst of changing situations. The weather on the mountains is always changing, with such beauty to be seen in their midst, but the mountains themselves don't change. They remain steadfast and firm.
That is my prayer today - to look to the Lord, and trust in Him always, and never let my focus be on the storm that rages or the struggles that we face, but rather to look to Him, who is unchanging, loving, gracious and merciful.
I hope you enjoy the video I chose to share today, featuring some of my dearly beloved mountains here where I live. Much love to all of you!

Oh sweet friend! I rejoice with you over the miracle of life both with Dan and the new babies the Lord has blessed your family with. His mercies are truly new every morning.
ReplyDeleteWe are freezing out here too....unusual for our area. Spring will be extra special this year with the sunshine and flowers:)
God bless you and keep you.
Sending hugs
This has been such an unusual winter in many ways - we've had floods instead of snowstorms. But, our Lord is still in control over it all, how thankful I am to know that He is! Spring will definitely be extra special for you all! Many blessings to you dear friend!
DeleteWhat a wonderful post - starting with that amazing report on Dan, right to those beautiful grandbabies. I'm so happy for you and thanking the Lord with you.
ReplyDeleteWe've been in a terrible weather run; snow every day and lots of it along with terrible cold. School was cancelled all last week and again yesterday. Church activities cancelled tonight because it's started up again. We are looking forward to Spring!
I'm so sorry that you are all getting the weather we need! We've had floods instead of snowstorms. So unusual. Praying you all warm up soon, and that spring comes quickly to your world! Thank you for your prayers!
DeleteI loved this post, everything about it. Well, except for Ryan's truck being frozen in. :-) The Psalm 121:1 was my Mom's favorite scripture. And she saw mountains for the first time less than a month before she died. I'm sure she's seeing many in Heaven.
ReplyDeleteLove all the photos of the babies with you and your family. And especially the wonderful news about Dan's health and being able to work again. God is SO GOOD!
Blessings and love,
Betsy
Thank you sweet Betsy for your faithful visits and comments! Your Mom and I share a love for that verse! I think I've mentioned it many times before. I'm glad she got to see the mountains before she died! Thank you for the prayers, we have appreciated them so much, and are just praising the LORD! Happy February to you!!
DeleteI am thrilled to know that Dan has recovered so wonderfully and can now return to work, Marilyn. Such a miracle!!! I know all of you are rejoicing in God's goodness and loving life with your beautiful grandchildren. Thanks so much for this update, my friend. Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteWe are SO thankful, Martha! The blessings of the LORD are rich indeed! We praise Him for His tender care over us. Thank you for your faithful prayers for us, and praying you all stay warm and cozy! Happy February!

ReplyDeleteWe are so very grateful to the Lord, and appreciate your prayers so very much! February blessings to you dear friend!
DeleteSuch good news you have to share! Praise the LORD! I love the selfie in the car with little Danika's face looking at the camera! So sweet. Thank you for the report and all the encouraging things in this post.
ReplyDeleteThat was a sweet moment, both grandgirls in the car, and they both were napping, and then so sweet when they woke up. Grandbabies fill our hearts with joy! Thank you for your prayers, and support, we appreciate so very much! Happy February!
DeletePrecious friend Marilyn ๐ฅฐ
ReplyDeleteReading first paragraph about Dan’s condition made me cry !
It must have been hard for you and family to see loved one in such threatening situation my friend ๐ฅน

I enjoyed the images of you and your sweet grandbabies ๐ฅฐsooo Cute ๐ค♥️
Yes Danika is growing so fast, how wonderful she had started to speak words already ๐๐ค♥️
Yes news about snow in US is heartbreaking ! My heartfelt prayers for those bearing miserable losses ๐
Sending you love and prayers my friend and to family ♥️๐ซ๐
Praise Jesus for your hubby recovering. I will make sure to pray for continuing recovering and healing. I also loved that little feet pic!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteA lovely post, so pleased that Dan has been able to return to work ... good news indeed.
ReplyDeleteLove the family photographs you've shared.
I can't believe January has almost come to an end ... early good wishes for the coming new month of February.
All the best Jan
Amen and praise the Lord for the great report on Dan's heart! That's amazing!!!! I pray he continues to do well while at work.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness! Glad you were able to pull Ryan's truck out of the ice. The ice is mostly thawed out now and now there's mud/slush in lots of places. There's mostly ice in shaded areas. I thank God that He kept us safe in the storm. That was a lot of sleet! The first night we were in our truck; amazing how white it got in so little time. So thankful my sister let us stay several nights with her as roads were too dangerous.
Cute pictures of Danika and Clara! What a blessing to see them often!
I'm not too fond of sourdough...but maybe I've ate them from the wrong places. That pizza looks delicious!
Thank you for sharing that sweet reminder of the Lord's steadfastness and care over us, Marilyn. :)
Many blessings to you and your family,
Valentine
Wonderful news that your husband can return to work, Marilyn, and that his heart numbers turned out good. God always hears our prayers. I love the picture of baby Clara's toes. Those feet and hand pictures are always so precious. The sourdough pizza looks really good. Oh my, Danika is learning sign language....and Spanish! My mom spoke Spanish fluently, and I know a few words, so could manage to speak it if I had to. It's not an easy language to learn. It's always such a joy to see your area covered in the white fluff. I've heard of chicory tea before, but was not familiar with the health benefits. Will have to pick some up at the store. Lovely words on the "mountains," and I could relate as the mountains surround this little town. I hope you have pleasant February days ahead, Marilyn. And I hope your husband grows stronger with each day.
ReplyDeleteIt's so wonderful that Dan is doing so well. I enjoy the pictures of Danika and little Clara. I'm looking forward to you sharing the heart healthy tips that we can all benefit from.
ReplyDeleteGreat news about your husband! Family time is the best!
ReplyDeletePraise God!!!! That is fantastic news about your hubby. I saw your coleslaw pic on the top. I made a french bistro coleslaw salad last night for dinner. SO good.
ReplyDeleteMy husband also had his heart attack (age 48 so 11 yrs ago) due to genetics. He carries nitro and takes a daily low dose aspirin. My mom died of a sudden heart attack. I pray I do not. I try to do as much as I can to take care of my health....phytosterols instead of a low dose statin; CoQ 10, no beef or pork products, limit eggs, bake with pure ingredients as much as possible; eat fruits andveggies and work out. It sounds like you two are doing similar things!! I will give the cacao and chicory drink a try for my cold afternoons. I don't use sweeteners in coffee unless an occasional drip of pure maple syrup.
and yay for Danika learning sign language. I taught my daughters some signs and being a special ed prek teacher of children with speech and language issues (along with emotional behavioral issues) i used sign language in my classroom. And I love that they've created a safe space for her to play and climb. Play is a child's work!!! Good job to the mom and dad :)
Thanking God and praying for the hurting along with you, Marilyn. Love and blessings!
ReplyDeleteHi Marilyn, could you e-mail me? I don't have your e-mail address. Thanks!
