Tiny bursts of color pushing their way out of the cold soil to the light above - how their arrival is enjoyed and celebrated! This lovely wild Glacier Lily (Erythronium grandiflorum) is a vibrant flower appearing just after the snow melts. They are a vital source of food for wildlife in early spring, particularly awakening hungry bears, who dine on their leaves and dig their bulbs to eat. All parts of this flower can be eaten, but with caution. I have never eaten one, as they are somewhat rare to see, and I enjoy their beauty. It takes each plant 8 years to mature. So I just enjoy their beauty when they grow in the wild. This one popped up in my garden!
Glacier Lily growing in my garden.
This is a beautiful Anemone that I planted several years ago, and it still continues to multiply and faithfully bloom each spring, alongside the snowdrops and glacier lilies.
My tulips are making great progress; it won't be long now!
These flowers aren't growing in my garden, but aren't they pretty just the same! Danielle's precious Mother-In-Love gave me the jar some time ago, and I just love to fill it with flowers. Carnations always make me smile!
A few daffodils are beginning to smile in the garden too! I enjoy each sweet bloom as it arrives.
Our church was given large boxes of potatoes from farmers in southern Idaho who needed to move their stock for spring. So, the girls and I decided to can potatoes. It was a lot of work! First, we peeled all the potatoes, then cubed them. Then they had to be boiled for 10 minutes.
Here are some of the potatoes we canned.
Unfortunately, during canning, there was a terrible accident. The above lid shown in the picture was the culprit. The company that makes these lids is relatively new, starting in 2021 when there was a canning lid shortage. I have used these lids in water bath canning with some failure rate. However, it may only be one lid that fails out of a batch of 20-30. That is not terribly unusual, because sometimes jars break, too. Any of you who have canned know the various things can happen to cause incidents while canning.
However, what happened to me was shocking, and perhaps we will never know for sure what went wrong. Our first batch of potatoes came out just fine. On the second batch, as I grasped the jar, the lid popped off the jar, and all the contents of the jar exploded out of the jar and onto me. My hand and forearm were severely burned instantly. The jar itself did not explode! It remained intact inside the canner.
WARNING! GRAPHIC PHOTO AHEAD... if you are squeamish, close your eyes, and don't look at the next picture. This is a picture of my hand two days after it had been burnt, at the doctor's office.
My hand was swollen and blistered, and the pain was excruciating.
We had Silvadene cream in our medicine cabinet. Dan was burned several years ago, and we still had a tube of it. I cooled the burn using cool water compresses for about 3 hours. Once my skin stopped steaming, we were able to apply the Silvadene cream and bandage it.
A picture of my dressing area for the burn.
Several days after the burn, the wound was raw and terribly painful. Each morning and night, I doctored it, using sterile saline (I made myself), gentle debridement, then application of the Silavdene cream, and then the sterile dressing.
I am so thankful to report that today, 10 days after the burn, I am completely pain-free, and the new skin is growing without infection or incident. Thank you, Lord!
I was so worried about the long-term effects of this kind of 2nd degree burn. The initial pain was awful, as any of you who've had burns would know. However, the Silvadene cream was such a miracle. So many of my close family and friends prayed for me, and I know the Lord touched me, and the quick healing that has taken place! Now, the burn looks like a bad peeling sunburn, and I don't even have any itching! I have never been burned like this in my life, and so this was new for me.
FIVE PRAISES!
1. My face wasn't burnt!
2. My fingers weren't burnt, just my right thumb.
3. It was me that was burned, and not Dan. He was with me and had offered to take the jars out of the canner, and I refused, as I was in the kitchen anyway. I can stay home in a clean environment and take care of my burn, but it would be very hard for him to work and take care of a burn.
4. The grandkids and girls had just left when this happened. I am so grateful they were not there when the lid exploded!
5. The jar did not explode! No one has great answers for how this happened. I've talked to the company, and they wonder if the screw-on band may have failed to hold the lid in place. Dan checked each jar before placing into the canner, and they were all secure. Perhaps we will never know.
However, I do know this one thing. I won't be using those canning lids ever again. I've had issues with them not sealing properly with water bath canning, and would just put the jar in the fridge when that happened. But having a lid blow off is just out of reason. Because it is a thicker rubber, apparently these lids do not seal well when the bands are not from that company. However, the lids are sold separately from the bands; in fact, I don't have any bands from the company to use.
I did reach out to the company and sent them photos. They responded:
Thank you for the photos.
I hope your doing a little better today.
I spoke to the owner regarding your experience.
We believe the band was the problem.
There may not have been enough contact between the thread of the rings and the tread of the jars. (Especially with the newer rings that have come in from overseas. We're experiencing a lot of variation.) Our lids have more rubber like the older lids used to have. The air that vents out of the jar that will create the vacuum to seal the jar, vents through the seal.
Please don’t use the old bands.
I will send you free of charge some new bands.
Let me know if you need regular size or wide mouth or both.
Please send your address to me and I will ship the new bands today.
However, Dan and I have decided after this traumatic experience that we won't be using those particular lids again. We will stick with the Ball or Kerr jar lids, where I have never had this kind of issue.
In other news! We had snow last Wednesday night. Not much! Just enough to let us know winter is still hanging out!
Riley and I walked out into our acreage to enjoy the beauty!
She and I love the snow. It wasn't much, but it was enough to make us happy!
These peas are itching to be planted! However, last week we got snow and very cold weather in the low 20's, so they will have to wait a while longer. I hope to be able to get them in the ground this week.
I let the chickens out late in the afternoon after all eggs are laid, so they can enjoy the green grass and hopefully forage for all the bugs that we will have this year due to our mild winter.
I created this video - the first I've done in many months (since Dan's heart attack!). I found an old audio clip of myself and two friends singing harmony with a friend playing the guitar. Our harmony isn't perfect, but I think you'll enjoy the video and our praise.
I am singing this song on repeat in my heart today. My heart is happy that the healing hand of the Lord brought such quick healing to my body. The garden is bursting with new wonder every day, and we are enjoying beautiful spring weather. The goodness of the Lord abounds, and we give Him praise for it all!
I hope you can find something in your world to be happy about today! Many blessings to each of you!
Oh Marilyn, I'm so sorry this happened to you. Burns are so very painful and I can see how horrible this was. I'm sticking with Kerr and Ball too. So thankful you are healing well. Silvadene is amazing stuff. I've used it on many patients for burns and wounds. Of course - the Lord is the healer!
Yes, our Lord is the healer, indeed! And Silvadene is a miracle cream for burns as well. I am just so grateful to how the Lord takes such good care of us, even when difficult things happen to us!
Oh, Marilyn, I'm so sorry this freak accident happened. What a horrific and painful experience to endure! I'm relieved that you are healing and not allowing this setback to stop you from going forward with your spring garden plans and living your life in a positive and inspiring way. May He continue to bless you and yours!
It was such a scary event, and I am so very grateful that the Lord helped me through it all. What would we do without HIM! I am happy to be back out in the garden, indeed!!!
Praise be to God for the healing. That's awful, Marilyn. Burns are the, worst! I've had a few but nothing like your burn. I'm so sorry this happened. I don't can and so I don't know much about all of that, other than watching my grandma do some canning. I enjoyed your pictures of the chickens and your flowers coming in. And even the dusting of snow. Blessings to you!
I have sunburns before, but nothing like this! It was so terribly painful in the beginning, but now, the pain is gone. I am so grateful, and thankful to the Lord for His healing touch, and for the miracle cream, Silvadene! Looking forward to enjoying garden work this week! Blessings to you!
Oh dear Marilyn... I am so very sorry that this has happened to you. Praying for a speedy healing and for no infections. Also that any pain you may be feeling will ease. I've not had this happen, but I have had friends who had issues with the lids like exploding off of the jars. Your jars of potatoes look so pretty. Beautiful photos of all the Spring that is popping up in your area. Blessings..
Thank you for your prayers, Shug, I appreciate that so much! I have never heard of a lid popping off a jar before, and I hope your friends didn't get injured. It definitely is something new for me, and I've been canning a long time. Thank you for your visit! Springtime blessings!
Oh Marilyn I'm so glad your burn is healing up but oh how traumatic that must have been! Ive never heard of that company. I agree that its best to stick with Ball and Kerr. I have some pressure canning to do. I have a daughter with slight autism and the steam sound from the steam valve bothers her so I can only can when she isn't at home. Take care!
It is definitely best to stick with the tried and true, I've learned my lesson! I understand how hard it must be to can if the steam bothers your daughter. I enjoy canning and preserving food as a gardener. I am going to invest in a large silicone glove to cover my arm, and maybe even wear goggles next time I can!
Oh Marilyn, that is absolutely terrifying. I'm also very grateful that it wasn't your face and eyes. I'm so very sorry that it happened at all. I have only ever used Ball and Kerr and after your experience, that will continue. You did such a great job caring for the burn. I'm very glad it's healing so well. Blessings and hugs, Betsy
I am so grateful that the Lord brought such quick healing for my hand! One just never knows what could go wrong, but He looks out for us, and takes such good care of us! It could have been my face. I have so much praise and thanks to the Lord! Blessings to you dear friend!
Dear Marilyn, what an awful experience. I know how grateful you are the burn healed as hoped and no infection of any kind. And you felt to share this and all the good news too. Which of us does not enjoy fresh blooming flowers! Wise decision not to continue with those canning lids. Take care and thank you for the lovely video/song. Lynn and Precious
Oh, Marilyn, I was so sorry to read about this unexpected and horrible accident. Yikes. I can only imagine your pain...for many days! So happy to read you are now pain free. Good choice to leave that company's canning goods behind. The Lord is the best of helpers for days like these and any day!!
Thanks for a lovely post. I enjoyed the pictures except for the ones of your poor hand/arm. I'm so sorry that this happened to you. It's a good lesson to stick to name brand jars and lids.
Dearest Marilyn, Yours was a terrible accident, you're fortunate to can tell it today that you've recovered, ... It could have been much worse indeed! Enjoy the very first signs of Spring, sweet Friend! May your days to come be filled with blessings XO Daniela @ ~ My little old world ~
Marilyn, such an awful experience. I am so sorry this happened to you. I know you are thankful for quick healing. Burns are very painful. So grateful your littles were there. Blessings. Your gardens are lovely. Spring time blooms bring smiles.
Oh gosh Marilyn! I'm so sorry that happened to you. It looks like it would be so painful! You took good care of it and it's healing wonderfully! Hae a blessed week my friend!
I'm so sorry to hear of your severe burn! Thankful to God for your healing also. Years ago I read that in Japanese hospitals they use Raw Honey on all burn patients. I started using it...And it also is wonderful on burns. I first put the burned part in a bucket of iced water till cool to the touch. Then very generously pile on the raw honey...cover with a tissue or cloth...keep putting raw honey on every 15-30 minutes, as the honey soaks in fast. Within a short period of time the pain diminishes. I think it's miraculous. The honey has raw enzymes that heal skin fast. Deb
Oh my dearest Marilyn, I gasped when I read and then saw what happened to you while you were canning the potatoes. You poor dear, but yes praise to Our Lord that you were so diligent in carefully treating your burn and then after a week of care, what a miracle!! I am so impressed with your recovery, my friend, and so happy that you’re ok. Praise to Our Lord and Savior!
Dear Marilyn, what a shocking thing to happen. I am amazed and thankful at the healing you are experiencing. Thanks be to God! I have a box of off-brand lids and haven't had any trouble, but your experience is making me re-think using them. The wild flowers are so pretty just now. Thank you for showing what's growing near you. The wild Fawn Lilies I see here (also known as Trout Lilies) last such a short time and I enjoy seeing them appear each year.
Oh Marilyn, I'm so sorry this happened to you. That is a terrible burn. Thankfully you had this cream to alleviate the pain. With all the care and treatment, and the Lord's healing, you will be back to canning in no time. Canning is a wonderful thing, and it's rare these days, but the foods that you preserve will be enjoyed in time. Take care, Marilyn, and you are starting to get some lovely blooms this spring! It's spring here also in the mountains. : )
Dear Marilyn! Who knew canning vegetables can be dangerous to your health???'!!! I'm so so GLAD that it wasn't worse! But what happened is bad enough and very scary! I've canned for many years and never had that happen. I never used a pressure canner as was always scared if could explode! I occasionally had a lid that didn't seal, but nothing popped off like that. Those burns are bad! You took care of them so well, and I CAN imagine the horrible pain, as was once burned with an iron, and boy did that hurt, but it was a small area on my arm. I would NOT use those lids or screw rings ever again. I would think they would have at least offered to pay any medical bills you have had. I'm going to get some of that cream for sure, just to have on hand. As we can see, a burn like that can happen at the most unusual times. One thing I want to mention, is that Vitamin E (gel from the capsules) is wonderful for putting on your scars from the burn (now is a good time to start) and it helps to heal the skin and scars and they will gradually disappear. My sister had a horrible burn on her arm one time, and she used the Vitamin E gel and the scar totally disappeared with time. I'm SO SORRY this happened to you! My prayers are with you. I listened to your sweet song and photos video, and I loved hearing you sing! I'm going to now have that song in my head for the next 2 days! Take care of yourself and be careful with that canning! Those potatoes look great though. I canned some once from my garden years ago, and loved having them to fry up. Hugs.. Marilyn
Hello Dear Friend, Oh my goodness. I am a canner as you know, so THANK YOU for sharing your story. I am so sorry this happened to you. I do understand your pain, I ended up having a second degree burn from a marshmallow that was on fire that slipped off the stick and on to my arm. We could not get the marshmallow off of me, it just sat there burning. My dad finally dumped soda on the marshmallow. I have a scar today but thankfully no pain. I will be praying, please do keep us updated on how you are doing. Love, Carla
oh Marilyn!!! Oh my goodness Im going to warn my sister Hope who does a LOT of canning about your experience with those lids/jars. I know NOTHING about canning although both my mom and paternal grandmother did it often as does my sister Hope. I'm so thankful to the Lord that He orchestrated the steps you listed above....no young granddaughters were there, the jar is a miracle that it too didn't explode and that your face was not burned!!!!! I'm going to put you on my prayer list and pray for a good recovery. BTW: love your flower pics!!
I am so sorry to hear of that terrible accident. That burn sounds frightening and painful. I didn't know such things could happen when canning. That is good to know you won't use that brand again. I hope you heal very quickly! The snow looks so peaceful. We've had snow here the last few days as well. God bless!
Oh, my friend!!!! I am glad you are pain free and so thankful alongside you with what you said BUT my heart literally hurt as I read. I am so thankful it was not worse. My friend!!!!!! Sending hugs!!
Praise the Lord indeed that your arm is healing so well after that awful experience!!!! I can only imagine the pain you were in-my goodness! Yes, oh my, how very thankful I am that your face wasn't harmed!
Beautiful flowers! I just adore flowers, tulips being my favorite. :) Many blessings and prayers to you, friend! Valentine
Oh Marilyn, my heart fell to my stomach when I saw your hand, I am so sorry. Hallelujah, that it healed as quickly as it did and that no infection got into it. That photo is going to make me extra careful when canning this year (or any year for the matter). My sister-in-law warned me about canning lids that year, because there were many lids coming out of China because of our shortage. I look for Ball or Kerr and a mark on the box that says made in the USA, I could be wrong but I just feel like the inspections might be more carefully checked. I hope that you can still enjoy those potatoes and that you don't cringe when you see a jar of them :) God bless dear blogging friend. I am so happy that He was watching over you that day and that you could see the blessings in this incident. 🙏
Well, the flowers and pictures are all just lovely and wonderful harbingers of spring. However, the burn on your hand was excruciating, I know! God certainly played into that if, after 10 days, you did not have pain! Unheard of-with a burn! Please, please be careful in the future. I have always had a fear of canning since my mother got burned when I was young. I don't know exactly how it happened but it burned her leg and it was months before it healed properly and she was left with quite a scar. I am a 'freezer' gal...not a canner! Hugs and prayers that you are doing well. xo Diana
Wow Marilyn, how scary! I am glad to hear that you are on the mend, but what a horrible experience. Definitely find some new canning materials please! Your flower photos are just lovely. My daffodils have already peaked and are nearly over for the season.
Dear friend Marilyn 🥹 It’s a shame that I opened your blog few days back but couldn’t read it until now 🥹 I am feeling speechless my dear friend!!!! Can’t think of appropriate words to say something,my eyes dropping tears since I saw first photo! I couldn’t imagine how painful it must have been for you dear Marilyn!!! I am sorry you went through this 🥹🫂
I am feeling utterly heartbroken still grateful for your hand healed well in ten days and it’s indeed a grace of kind God🙏🥹
Thank goodness you have kept this tube and it worked miraculously 🥹 I believe that in future you will never use anything that feels troublesome when you use it , it’s true that understanding how it happened is hard. It reminds me accident that has happened to me some years ago and twice ,the in between break was three or four years I guess. Here gas is used for stoves, so along with iron pipes a small piece of plastic pipe is fixed to the stove. It stays locked in the cabinet under the stove. Once when I got in the kitchen and tried to lit the stove the cabinet beside my legs burst out with fire. The plastic pipe had fallen down and gas had filled the cabinet. I didn’t know nor realised.my arms that were leaning close to the stove were burnt ,one severely, other less but fingers were fine. It’s been more than eight years now but I still have stain . Other accident was when hot boiling water fell on my forearm and it was absorbed immediately by the thick sweater I had worn. It caused deep burns and despite more than ten years I have marks on my forearm. Dear Marilyn, please take great care of yourself even though your hand looks good by the grace of God please take care 🙏♥️ You will be in my thoughts and prayers dear friend! I loved pretty blooms smiling in your garden,it’s God’s affirmation 🥹♥️ Sending love and healing energy to you and loved ones 🙏♥️🥹
Oh, dear friend! It was so hard for me to see the pictures and to think of how you suffered! I mean I knew from you telling me, but to actually see it, oh, my. It just touched my heart so deeply. Surely the healing hand of Jesus was upon you and also His protection. To think of all that could have happened, and then to see how quickly He brought healing. I am SO thankful you are no longer in pain! I loved hearing you sing so much! It was just beautiful. I think I can distinguish which voice is yours. It made me think of the style of Peter, Paul, and Mary. I just loved hearing it. May the Lord richly bless you and keep you. Sending much love to you tonight, in Jesus' name.
Oh Marilyn! I literally gasped when I saw the photos. Burns are terrible and terribly, terribly, unrelentingly painful. I just can't even imagine how you toughed your way through that. Thank goodness for that cream. We have had a few unfortunate incidents and have it on hand. It does help, but yikes. Awful. I'm so happy to hear that you are healing and feeling much better. Sending you prayers for continued health and healing and yes, toss those lids! Thanks but no thanks!! xo

ReplyDeleteOh, my friend!!!! I am glad you are pain free and so thankful alongside you with what you said BUT my heart literally hurt as I read. I am so thankful it was not worse. My friend!!!!!! Sending hugs!!
ReplyDeletePraise the Lord indeed that your arm is healing so well after that awful experience!!!! I can only imagine the pain you were in-my goodness! Yes, oh my, how very thankful I am that your face wasn't harmed!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers! I just adore flowers, tulips being my favorite. :)
Many blessings and prayers to you, friend!

I hope that you can still enjoy those potatoes and that you don't cringe when you see a jar of them :)
ReplyDeleteGod bless dear blogging friend.
ReplyDeleteHugs and prayers that you are doing well. xo Diana
Wow Marilyn, how scary! I am glad to hear that you are on the mend, but what a horrible experience. Definitely find some new canning materials please! Your flower photos are just lovely. My daffodils have already peaked and are nearly over for the season.

ReplyDeleteIt’s a shame that I opened your blog few days back but couldn’t read it until now 🥹
I am feeling speechless my dear friend!!!!
Thank goodness you have kept this tube and it worked miraculously 🥹
I believe that in future you will never use anything that feels troublesome when you use it , it’s true that understanding how it happened is hard.
Dear Marilyn, please take great care of yourself even though your hand looks good by the grace of God please take care 🙏♥️
You will be in my thoughts and prayers dear friend!
I loved pretty blooms smiling in your garden,it’s God’s affirmation 🥹♥️
Sending love and healing energy to you and loved ones 🙏♥️🥹
The Anemone is beautiful. Is that hard to grow and keep alive?
ReplyDeleteOh, dear friend!
ReplyDeleteOh Marilyn! Thanks but no thanks!! xo
