Delightful Snowfall Followed by High Winds

Wednesday, November 18, 2015

We had a wintry mix blow in Monday night, and Tuesday morning when we got up, the whole world was clothed in deep inches of fluffy whiteness.  Oh, it was lovely!  I knew that it wasn't going to last long, because rain and high winds were in the forecast for later in the day, and so I got dressed while it was still barely dawn and went outside.  The dogs, of course, were with me, and what fun we had!

Roger couldn't wait to play in the snow. Of course... all he thinks about is playing anyway, so the snow just made it more fun for him.

We got a good 3 inches of snow.

I love to see the pine trees covered with the frothy lace designs of the snow.

Looking up through the tree to the sky above...

The chickens did not want to come out, and just stood at the open door looking at the snow.

After I fed them, they were content to stand and watch the snow from the inside looking out!

The gentle world of white...

The loveliness abounded in the wonder of the fresh white snow...

The dogs enjoying a good romp in the fresh wet snow.

Annie and her nose...

For some reason - we don't know why - Annie loves to stick her nose deep into the snow.  It's her favorite thing to do when there is snow to play in.

See!  I was quick enough with the camera to catch this picture, because she does it so quickly.  But this is what she loves... a cold nose deep in the snow, and then she shakes her head and smiles as only dogs can do!

She also loves to catch snowballs, and this was perfect snow for snowballs.  I threw quite a few to her, and she caught them all and ate them.  Roger was perplexed, he couldn't understand what the snowball catching was all about.

After a few minutes of playing outside in the snow, it began to rain - really-really rain!  Oh I was so sad to see all the rain come, and slowly the snow dripped away.  Then, later in the afternoon, things got much worse.  A huge storm blew in from the Gulf of Alaska with incredible wind gusts that I think got up to at least 60-75 miles an hour here.  Our trees were bending under the power of the wind. After one incredible gust, I didn't think we'd have power long, and I was right.  My son and I were preparing to go and get the generator, and as we were, the power flickered and went out.  Luckily I had dinner ready to go, and we enjoyed steaming bowls of Creamy Chicken Soup in the flickering candlelight.  :)

Later in the evening I saw the power truck drive up our neighbor's driveway, and not too long after that our power was restored, so we think a tree or a limb may have went down on the lines in her yard.  She was not home at the time, so I couldn't check with her to see.  We will walk over there today to make sure all is well.  But thankfully, our power was restored late last evening.

This morning, I will be walking outside to check on our trees and see how they fared in the horrible winds we had yesterday.  From what I could see looking out in our yard, we lost no trees, but I will know for sure once I get out this morning to do a check on our forest.

How is the weather in your area? It seems many areas this year are experiencing unusual and difficult weather patterns.  Looking at the weather forecast, for the next week or two it seems that sunshine is in the forecast, and for that, I am thankful!  :)

  1. Brrrr....that looks so cold to me-but I know we are not far behind! I think those are some smart chickens you have there- stay inside, eat and watch the snow outside.
The winds really can do you in when it is cold and snowing. Our wind has been non-stop this last week. ugh!
I am NOT READY!!!!! xo Diana ps. Glad you got your power back on....

    1. That wind was really something! Thankfully we hardly ever get any wind here, so it was very unusual. It has been cold but sunny here, not bad! I am glad for the sunshine! I hope the weather you get this weekend won't be too bad and that you don't lose power!!!

  2. Oh, my! I am so sorry your power went out and the winds were so strong!! Thank the dear Lord for protecting you all through that. I got a kick out of thinking about Rudy being in that coop and unable to come out and perform his shenanigans!!! That is one way to settle him down, huh?? :) So funny!! Oh, the pictures were just lovely. My favorite one was where you were looking up at the sky through the tree limbs and the ones of that Annie sticking her nose in the snow!! Oh, she is a character!!! It is amazing how every creature has its own personality. God is so amazing!!! Thank you for sharing what is going on in your wintry world!!! Love you, sweet friend.

    1. It was a wild day with the winds and power outages for sure, but we are so very thankful our power is on - there are thousands in our area who don't expect to get power back until this weekend. I thank the Lord for ours getting back on quickly!

And Rudy - well, his shenanigans happen in or out of the coop, lol! I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures, as I know you don't often see snow where you live. And Annie loves the winter so much, and loves to play in the snow. She makes winter so fun for us!

Appreciate your visit so very much, and trust that you are doing well too my friend! Much love and many hugs :)

  3. We had lots of rain and high winds last night. No damage at our place our anywhere else that we could see. Power never went out. Today is calm. Tonight we'll have a low around 16 degrees. We've only had one light dusting of snow so far this season. At higher elevations in the county we're told they had a storm last week that dropped 8". Tis the season! xo

    1. Yes indeed, tis the season! Winter is just teasing us still as well... no permanent snow on the ground here either. Glad that you did not have any wind damage at your place. The damage in our area is quite significant. We were blessed to have one only tree down. Thousands are still without electricity, and we are now in a cold snap. Wow - 8" of snow in the mountains, that is wonderful! I'm sure all the skiers are happy now! We have snow in the mountains as well around us. It's so beautiful. The snow adds such character to the mountains, I think. Appreciate your visit, and hope your day has been lovely :)

  4. Your photos of the fresh snow are pretty and I know how disappointing it is to have snow followed by heavy rain....unless it's in March. :) There have been some wild storms in western Canada and southern BC too, so I hear on the news. Our son's dog, Marshall, does the same thing as Annie and he loved to catch snowballs. He's so blind he can't see them now. :( He used to dig holes in the snow then lay down in them which I think is the Husky in him. Still sort of mild here as in no snow but rain coming for the next 2 days. Have a blessed day.

    1. Yeah, in March it is exciting to see the rain come and the snow leave... but right now, it is rather disappointing, for sure! I love the delicate beauty of the snow on the trees and covering everything in its white finery. I guess BC got the same storm we did, it was wild! They said they were hurricane force winds. Oh, I bet Annie & Marshall would have a blast together! I hope someday you'll post a picture of him on your blog so I can see him. I think the husky in them must come out in the snow, for sure. Appreciate your visit as always, and hope you had an enjoyable day out with your friends :)

  7. You have captured perfectly what I love most about winter! Fresh fallen snow is so beautiful! I try not to complain about winter too much because once I am in it, I love it. I would not want to go without the seasons as in some parts of the country and world. Your doggys are so sweet!

    1. Oh, the freshly fallen snow is gorgeous. Sometimes the beauty of it almost hurts my heart, if you know what I mean! I hate to see it get all messed up by cars and dogs and dirt, too, lol! That is why when it freshly snows, I try to get out early in the morning, before the busy-ness of the day "uglies" it up. I do love all the seasons, and look for things to be thankful with each one of them, I agree!

Yes, are doggies are quite special... we love them dearly :) Appreciate your visit today, and hope your day was wonderful too! :)

  8. Snow, glorious snow! Don't you just love the white, sparkly stuff? :) How I adore winter and the cold, crisp days - I come alive when I see snow.

Your photos are simply lovely, my friend, and your dogs are just too cute!

It's such a joy to visit with you today! Much love to you!

  9. What a lovely post!
All the snow pictures but my favorite is the henhouse with the lights on.

Down here in Southern Idaho, we didn't get the snow. Just the wind!

    1. The henhouse was my favorite picture too! It looks so cozy with the warm red light on inside early in the morning. So - no snow for you down in south Idaho, huh! I'm sure it's coming, winter is just getting warmed up, lol! Oh the wind - wasn't it crazy! They said they were hurricane force winds here. So glad that you fared well through the storm! Appreciate your visit as always, and hope your day has been a good one! :)

  10. Your snowy landscape is beautiful! I like winter and the beauty this season holds.
We had snow a couple of weeks ago and then the weather turned balmy for some reason - 56F at 6:30 this morning! It's coming back this weekend though as we get back to normal temperatures for November.
My cockapoo doesn't like the snow, so much so that in winter he just goes out the back door on the deck for his business. :-)
I like your suggestion from the previous post to use Scripture for a password - such a good idea I'm going to share it myself.

    1. I look forward to all the seasons, things would be so boring without a bit of change! It really did warm up for you at 56 degrees! Our high here the last few days has been in the 40s, sometimes 30s, with lows dipping down into the teens - brr! I bet your cockapoo doesn't like the snow, lol! Some dogs just shiver and shake in the cold, and I feel so bad for them. Annie, our husky/german shepherd mix comes alive in the snow, and gets frisky and happy as can be. Our animals are so much fun, aren't they!

I'm glad you liked the scripture password idea... it has helped me so much already with the tough decisions that have to be made about what passwords to use!

Have a blessed and wonderful day :)

    1. It was so beautiful, and I was so happy to get out there early and enjoy it with the dogs, and just in time, because the rain came so quickly, and washed it all away - sadly! And oh how happy we were to get our power back on. Thousands and thousands of people still have no electricity here. It is quite a rough situation for many. I stopped to get gas today, and several people were there filling up their gas cans for their generators. That could have been me. I'm so thankful ours came back on quickly!

  12. Hi, I always love visiting you and tonight is no different. You make me see the snow through your eyes and it is lovely! Loved seeing your pups play in the snow, our Hunter loves to rub his face in the snow-hubby thinks he's trying to get some smells, but I think it must feel good. The storm didn't last long in No.C. And today while cold was sunny. Stay warm!

  13. The winds have been very strong here too. Almost daily! We are expecting snow later today and into tomorrow. Your photos are wonderful! I especially like the one of the chicken house all lit up. Glad to hear you didn't have to muddle through too long without power.
    Have a fun weekend!

  14. Our grand dog likes to stick his nose in the snow as Annie did. Sure glad we don't have that amount of snow (though it will come)! Yesterday was drizzly and it rained all night. But today is as sunny and mild as spring. It's been a beautiful day here in New Hampshire.

  15. Snow!...I'm jealous! We were supposed to get snow early this week, but instead we got massive high winds and the snow went right around us. Our power flickered on and off all day that day. It did end up going out for an hour around 1 am. All I kept telling myself was... oh my my hubby's alarm clock wont go off since we have no power. So, I couldn't sleep. I laid there and prayed and them after an hour it came back on and I got up found a flashlight and fixed his alarm clock. He is so lucky to have me. Haha!

Your snow is beautiful even if it only lasted for a little while. We got that dreaded wind again today, and I guess it's suppose to be frigid tomorrow. We sure could use the moisture. It is sooooo dry here! Our mountains got a ton of snow,so that is great!

I hope you have a lovely weekend and if I don't make it back on the computer...Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

    Hugs,
    Amy
