Hues of Green

Thursday, April 14, 2016

It has been quite joyous around here the last few days, because spring certainly seems to have arrived!  Last week we had lovely sunshine weather with highs in the 70s, and this week it has been cooler and raining.  The rain is just perfect for the leaves that are budding out, and I saw two pairs of robins in my yard too!  So, I do believe it is safe to say spring is here!

We haven't had time to plant grass yet this year because of the beetle issue we had, and we are still having to take out many trees.  We want to wait until the trees are all down and the brush burnt before we plant grass.  But... I am so thankful to see bits of green poking their heads up all over the yard, even if they are weeds, lol!

Miss Eleanor loves my camera.  She comes running right to me as soon as she sees me outside with it.  Who could blame such a pretty girl for wanting to get her picture taken!

The chickens are happy to see so much green everywhere too!

Martha does not care for the camera. I can never get her to look at me.  She is rather shy, and stays very busy.  I think Martha is a good name for her.  :)

Mr. Rudy found something of interest and Eleanor rushed over to see what it was after she heard his happy chortles.  He stepped back and let her have it.  He is quite the gentleman to his ladies!

As you can see, we still have trees down all over our yard because of the beetle invasion.  No sense planting grass yet, although I want to quite badly.  We still have a lot of work to do.  It will get done... eventually!

In the coop... the seven little ones are growing!  They are learning to fly and run around the coop quite happily now.  I was worried about integrating them with the larger hens so I took things slowly.  I let in two of my sweet hens - Momma Mia and Goldie.  They did not bother the little ones at all, and it was good for them to mingle.  For several days I would let the baby chicks out with several of the older hens in with them.  So far we have had no issues.  Now, I have opened the chicks' coop so that they can run freely about and the older hens just continue on with business as usual.  So thankful that this transition  is going well so far!

It is hard to believe how fast they grow!  They are almost 6 weeks old!  I expect that they will start laying eggs sometime in September.

My seedlings are doing great!  Here they are already starting to put on secondary leaves.

I found this happy pink ribbon on sale at Walmart for 0.50 for the spool.  It spruced up my old metal watering can.

I love my Welcome sign... soon we will see the shades of pink everywhere as our wild roses will bloom in May... can't wait!  For now... I am content to enjoy the hues of green everywhere.  :)

    1. Oh yes, I do understand the problem with having trees in the way of burn piles, lol! Pine trees have a tremendous amount of brush with each tree, so our burn piles get very big quickly. Good luck with yours! Appreciate your visit here today :)

  9. I love all of your signs of Spring you've shared with us. It is finally starting to warm up here, too. I'm glad the chicks transitioned so well with the older hens. That is a relief for you, I'm sure.

    1. Yes, that was a huge relief for me, because there are a few hens who can be quite cranky, however they all seem to be tolerating the little ones quite well. Hoping that spring comes soon to your part of the world... snow in April is definitely not fun to experience! Have a lovely weekend too! :)

  12. I love all the pictures of your girls...they are so cute with their fluffy feathers. :) That beatle invasion has been so bad. I am seeing lots of trees down in this area that also need to be taken out before the infection spreads. I hope you do not lose too many trees to this.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. We have lost about 100 trees if our count is correct. It is a tremendous amount of work that we didn't realize it would be. Hope you have been enjoying the lovely spring weather we have had here the last few days :)

Your old watering can looks fabulous with the bow, what a great price. It's so nice that Spring is here. I'm listening to the birds outside and loving it and our Peepers have finally started to sing. 15. Your chickens have great names! It must be fun to know their different personalities and to call them by name. It is great to see the green grass poking through now. A lovely sunny day here but the wind is very cold. I need to find a sheltered sunny spot to stay warm.....with a jacket on. Enjoy! Blessings, Pam

  17. It is always a joy to see your chickens with all their funny personalities. My grandmother had chickens and dearly loved them each one unique in their own way she would say.
Miss Eleanor is something else, why you can see how she just glows for her picture to be taken. She even tilts her head a bit. :-)
Your watering can looks lovely sitting there all prettied up in pink and ready for use.
Our 11 inches of snow yesterday hasn't slowed the wild life down any here. I did spread extra feed for them as a treat. :-)
Our power went out due to the weight of the snow, but it was back on rather quickly.
Spring weather is always interesting. We have learned to enjoy it all.

    The Lord bless you, Marilyn

  19. Well when you're so pretty like Miss Eleanor and Martha, a camera can be your best friend! I would love to have a couple of hens, but we live in town and they are not permitted. I would name them Ethel and Lucy. Loved your pictures today...hope you have a great weekend.

  20. So sorry about the beetles on the pine trees. We have something going on with our state conifers...a fungus amongus I believe. It is sad to see so many trees dying and I can't imagine how it will be if it wipes them all out.

Gosh, I selected a similar ribbon at Joann's the other day...smaller, but the same color and pattern. It looks cute on the watering can.

    1. These tree infestations are so horrible. We had no idea how bad it was going to be. It just never seems to end. We are trying to take out the trees ourselves, but because the trees are damaged, it makes it more challenging.

How funny that we both found the same ribbon! I really am enjoying the colors on my vintage watering can :)

Hope you are doing well Vee, many hugs to you today!

  21. Love your photos! I'm wondering if your rain has turned to snow; here in Colorado we got hit hard again. I'm thinking all the blossoms on the Pear Trees will be gone and I just hope my Tulips aren't damaged, just buds not blooms yet. I'm hoping that this is the very last snow storm we get, but one never knows in this crazy state~we can get them till mid May. Hope you have a great day!
    Hugs,
    Noreen

  22. Hi Marilyn! Things are really growing at your place! Between the chickens and the seedlings, life is throbbing and breaking through. What a blessing to see so much moving and alive!
It's finally warm here today, and I'm hoping for a good week. My yard is a MESS from last fall. I have much to do to see the growth you see in my gardens!

  23. Pretty pictures! We too are enjoying the signs of Spring. Today we went on a walk and I found Mayflowers (Hepatica) - they are so pretty! Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me. I am glad that your chicks are integrating well with your older ones. Our son, Aaron bought 3 chicks this year and we will work to integrate them with our bigger chickens before long.

  25. Is pink your favorite color? I don't like grass one bit- at least grass in the yard. So it's no surprise that I don't have any! I have been very thankful about that as it has made looking after my yard a whole lot easier. Your pictures are nice- they give an impression of peace and tranquility.

    1. Grass is a lot of work, but I think I hate dust even more. I am thinking about planting clover...it is an organic alternative to grass, and a better natural ground cover, which doesn't need to be mowed, but looks green and lovely. I think my chickens would like it too. Thank you for your kind words about the pictures! :)
