Easter Trip to Texas and Idaho Springtime

Wednesday, April 19, 2023

My husband and I traveled to Texas over Easter to visit our family there. It was wonderful to see everyone and to spend precious moments with my parents and Dan's mom.  Another reason we like to go to Texas in the springtime is to see the hallmark Texas beauties - the bluebonnets.  I wasn't sure we would see any, as the season came earlier this year. But, we persevered, and found some!

We took a drive along the Willow City Loop just south of Llano, Texas, and that is where these beautiful blooms were gracious enough to wait and give their last best for us.

The poppies were already in bloom,
as the bluebonnets were at the end of their season.

Just off the road, the blues were putting on a show!

A vintage tractor parked strategically in a field with an old cedar fence,
what a lovely scene this was!

It was very dry this year, moreso than other years. But we did find this beautiful stream with a little waterfall highlighted by the bluebonnets and black-eyed susans!

My brother hosted our Easter dinner, and his yard was in bloom with these gorgeous snapdragons.

We had a wonderful time there - although the days flew by quickly.  Soon it was time to return home.

The kids bought me some flowers to welcome me back home!
It was good to be home - always good to go,
but even better to return to "home sweet home"!

In the garden, I found these "glory of the snow" flowers blooming.
They are faithful to bloom early every spring, and I am always happy to see them!

This robin was busy at work in our yard, another great sign of Spring!

Spring runoff is always a good sign to see!

Yesterday morning - my world looked a lot like winter! Winter sure has been a bear this year - just doesn't want to leave! However, the snow we got was not very much, and melted quickly, also providing good moisture and nitrogen for the soil.  Almost all of our snow left over from winter has melted too, and I have been busy in the garden doing cleanup since last fall.

And even though we may have snow in April
we will have blooms in May!

How is Spring looking in your world? I know that springtime blooms will be bursting out here soon, and I am looking forward to it with great anticipation! The baby chicks are growing-growing, and soon I will have them ready for locals and friends. Their little antics are so fun to watch!

A dear friend of mine who buys eggs from me has started collecting her scraps, and bringing them to the chickens when she gets her eggs. Isn't that a great blessing! I think it is a wonderful trade-off :)

Well, I must close for now ... my yard is full of pine needles and pine cones that must be raked to allow the grass to grow, and my garden needs a lot of attention - lots of cleanup after winter's heavy snow. I have leaves and compost to spread, and seedlings to baby... ah yes, the joys of springtime!  Now that the snow has had time to melt, it will be good to get these things done!

Leaving you with this beautiful worship medley to enjoy,
may your heart be encouraged and blessed in the Lord
and the beauty around us in Springtime!

  1. How lovely to have a Spring in Texas with wild flowers and the snapdragons. Then as your cold disappears, you get a second Spring. Those little chicks do grow fast. Here, in just one week, we have trees showing a fuzz of green, more wildflowers open and some sunshine. Happy garden cleaning. Lynn and Precious

  3. Thank You for sharing these beautiful pictures. Our yard needs a lot of cleaning up,too. Today we raked a lot of left over leaves from Autumn. We wanted to mow our front yard, but the mower broke. A neighbor mowed it with his mower. We have ordered a new one. Hope you get to clean up, so your grass can grow.

  8. Beautiful Blooming Bluebonnets! The old tractor in a field of poppies sure caught my eye. Spring is a busy time but full of loveliness. The trip to visit dear ones in Texas must have been so pleasant. Memories to cherish as you rake the pine needles and prepare the garden for another season.

  9. Thank you for sharing the beautiful Texas flowers with us. You have such a gift for photography. The photo of the vintage tractor in the field is stunning.
We've had tornado warnings here the past two nights, but hopefully, the storms have now ended for the night. Flowers are growing and it's been a beautiful few weeks but we're about to go back in the deep freeze with below freezing temperatures during the next few nights.
Enjoy the garden prep. I know we'll get to enjoy the beauty that God creates there through your camera this summer.
    Blessings and love,

    1. Thank you for your kind words Betsy, it is my joy to share the beauty I capture with others! I've seen the terrible storms across the midwest, they have been really terrible this year! We got snow last week, but this week the weather people tell us we may see 70 degrees - so that would be exciting! I appreciate your friendship so very much, many blessings to you!

  10. Seeing your brother's beautiful yard in bloom does make me wish for the longer growing season of Texas. It has been a long winter here in Colorado, too. I covered up my clematis last night just to be safe. Ugh. Can't wait until this is over. Love your post. So uplifting. Love to you, my friend! Hugs.

  14. The bluebonnets are beautiful and black eyed susans are some of my very fave wildflowers! Glad you had a wonderful Easter trip.
thankfully no spring snow here in eastern NY, BUT we didn't really get winter until March as you might know from the news (although the rest of NY was inundated with many inches of snow from Dec-March). My tulips are all up and blooming and my pear tree is in full bloom....at peak right now.
Enjoy the start of your Spring and good luck with the gardening and baby chicks!
I will come back after work to listen to your medley.

  16. Oh, I've heard about the Texas Bluebonnets. Aren't they gorgeous? Love their color. They look so pretty along side the road. I know what you mean about winters lingering on, as we had a few sunny days, and yesterday I saw a bit of snow on my car. Not much at all, but the mornings are still cold, so we just don't know what to expect with mountain weather, do we? I related to your post very much today, Marilyn, as I have been outside raking leaves too, and those pine needles and pine cones are never ending. But it sure is a peaceful place to live. Your photo of the purple flower with the snow is so pretty. Your brother's back yard is charming with the canopy and snapdragons. I'm glad you got to see your family at Easter. And it's always nice to be home. I am going to see my family coming up, so please say a prayer for safe travels. Thank you, dear Marilyn.

    1. Texas bluebonnets are so amazing! We have lupins here, which are similar, but it seems that by the time they bloom, the weeds have taken off and compete with them so it is hard to see them. In Texas, the bluebonnets just are such a striking color against all the green of spring. It has been a long slow spring here, but we are enjoying some beautiful days now, which has been wonderful! I hope you have a safe time traveling Sheri, you are in my prayers that you have a very special and wonderful time with them!

  17. Oh I am glad a few bluebonnets were still in bloom when you went to visit your family :). We always enjoy going home to Michigan to enjoy the fall colors. Most of our trees have already bloomed, there are a couple left. The strawberries will be producing soon :). My favorite picture is the tractor in the field.
Hopefully you will be done with the snow soon.

So glad you were able to make that nice trip to be with your families. I am certain they were happy to have you there as well. And now you have a lot to do to get ready for springtime and gardening, etc. But it sounds like you truly enjoy this season and you will reap the rewards of your labors when things grow and produce "fruit" for you this summer. 25. Hi Marilyn! I knew you'd gone to Texas for Easter, but didn't get a chance to come see your blog post! I love Facebook for that reason... I get a quick overview of my friends' doings! Your photos are gorgeous.... LOVE the one of the old tractor in the field behind the rugged wood fence.. and of course, all the blues! I saw on the news that there was very unusual high bloomings in Texas of the bluebonnets. I bet you got to see them! Those snapdragons in your brother's yard are stunning! I grew some last year and they did very well in this dry climate. I will plant some again.. they didn't get as large and full as your brother's though! Oh you have so much work ahead of you, but you always do it with positivity, gratefulness and a smile! I hope you don't get too many more snows! The dusting of snow on the flowers always looks so strange.. but another of God's ways to bring us pleasure. Not too much happening here in the way of Spring. My neighbors do have some daffodils blooming.. my Irises are popping up very quickly, my peach tree as buds and tiny leaves coming out, and 3 of my 4 blueberry bushes have tons of buds. I hope we don't get a late freeze to kill them all, which can always happen here. We may get nighttime temps of in the 20's even in May, like you I'm sure! We're coming into a few days of our first warm weather.. in the 80's! I'm so glad and I'm sure it'll make me want to go plant flowers... but really IS too early for that here. I'll sit in the sun and daydream about it! Hugs.. Marilyn J.

    1. Oh sweet Marilyn - you always leave such lovely comments! I was so thankful to be able to go to Texas and be with the family, and enjoy the flowers too. Texas bluebonnets are truly spectacular - our lupins are similar, but they have to compete with the weeds by the time they bloom here - while in Texas, the bluebonnets outgrow everything else. I hope you are enjoying beautiful weather and that all your plants survived and are budded out. We have had some lovely spring days here, and last week got some much needed rain, and now this week more sun. So thankful! It is truly an amazing time of year! Thankful for the spring bloom parade :) Blessings to you dear friend!
