Little August Blessings with Northern Lights

Monday, August 12, 2024

I was delighted to see exciting promises that both the Aurora and the Perseids meteor showers were going to be seen in our area on Sunday night, August 11.  As I waited outside for the clouds to part, I was able to see some aurora activity, but unfortunately, because of the clouds, I couldn't see the meteor activity. It was a truly beautiful night though, and I have put together a video (below) of some of the pictures that I captured Sunday night. The vibrant skies spoke to the incredible Hand of the Lord who created such magnificence for us to see!

It is always an exciting thing to witness the incredible beauty of the aurora in our northern skies, especially on warm nights, when I'm not freezing trying to capture the beauty!

Some things I've enjoyed this lovely first week of August...

Sweet kitty naps!

Early morning walks with a crisp breeze - Fall is coming, of that we are sure!

It was nice to see some blue skies today - as our skies have been quite hazy with smoke (from other places).

Our morning walks are the best part of our day!

I listen to worship music as I walk, and talk to the Lord too. My walking time in the morning is an exercise for both my body and my soul!

A few pots sitting on an old wooden ladder in my garden, filled with succulents.

This dahlia overwintered in the bottom drawer of my refrigerator, and has bloomed once again!

Neighbors had us over for dinner this past weekend. She got creative with her zucchini, and made a zucchini casserole that was so yummy! I've got to try to make it myself. She had no recipe - just a bit of this and that - but it was GOOD! She used zucchini, hatch chilies, and ricotta cheese. So good!

A variety of rudbeckia growing happily! Always so charming in late summer!

A friend and I meet once a week for prayer in our gardens.

We enjoyed a little tea time as we shared our prayer requests, and then prayed together. Always a blessing to pray with a friend!

A peek of my garden ...

I am working on a new book project! I will share more about that in another post. :)  While I write, I have LOTS of company! Makes it hard sometimes to get anything done :)

So there you have it - a week of lovely little things - that all add up to blessings rich and sweet! It was icing on the cake after a wonderful August week to enjoy the splendor of the aurora. I just finished a video tonight showcasing some pictures I took. The cats, Riley and I enjoyed the show as everyone else had already gone to bed. It was a late night - but oh, it was worth it!

I hope that you will enjoy this video paired with some of my favorite scriptures! May your week be lovely and full of sweet August blessings!

  4. The aurora was seen here too, but we missed it. I didn't know it was happening and we have to many trees to see it without going out in our car.
Your photos are so beautiful, as always and the garden looks great!

    1. The aurora always happens so late at night, and it's hard to stay awake! And yes, you need some clear spaces in order to be able to see them. Our home has a great northern view, so that is a blessing. Thank you for your kind words, and I am enjoying the pared-down garden this year!

  5. Our Adirondack mountains had the northern lights as well and sadly I wasn't up there!! Your video is beautiful as are your gardens. I LOVE that you get together once a month for prayer time with your friend. I do the same thing with my older sister in Christ and spiritual mentor. God bless you this week, Marilyn!!

    1. I watched a video of someone who said that was an option if you don't have a cold room - which I don't. It worked well for the smaller dahlias, but not so well for my dinner plate ones. Not sure why. But, I am grateful to have their beautiful blooms! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Many blessings to you!

  10. Your tea time looks nice, Marilyn. I love the polka dot cups. The aurora skies are wonderful, and I've always wanted to see them. The zucchini casserole looks delicious, and so nice of your neighbor to have you over for dinner. Your walks in the morning sound so lovely with your dog. And your kitty looks comfortable and content sitting on the couch. Little Mia wants a puppy for Christmas, so I'm anxiously waiting to see if she will receive one. I'm a dog person, so it's exciting for me too. Wishing you pleasant August days, Marilyn.

  14. Wow those were some amazing sky pictures, we have not seen them that well down here in mid Illinois. We missed the meteors too, we were too tired to go see them. We have a life group from church that is 5 couples and we get together once a week, it is good having a group to talk, and pray with.
Hope the skies continue to be clear and the fires end soon!

    1. We are definitely seeing signs of fall here - our maple tree is starting to turn as are other bushes and shrubs. The nights are cooler, and days shorter. Summer is winding down. It has been a good summer. But we haven't had the awful temps you've had! I hope you get some wonderful fall weather soon! Blessings to you dear friend!

  18. Marilyn, your garden still is looking pretty. Mine is all but gone, I'm afraid. You probably are getting some of our smoke. It is beginning to be a bad time of year for those. A lady was just arrested for starting a fire in a public area just a little ways away from our home. They caught her and got the fire out but it could have been a really bad thing. Your summer skies are just beautiful and I think that fall is getting close. I am looking forward to it..xxoJudy

    1. I know the heat has been so difficult this year! Hoping that changes for you, and that fall weather brings relief! How awful that someone was caught setting a fire! Just horrific, the lives that were forever damaged because of that! We do have mostly beautiful summer skies, although we have had some smoke. In the last few days, we did get some rain, so that has helped tremendously. Yes, fall weather and skies will be much appreciated! Much love to you!

  23. Wow, you are really busy doing all sorts of cool things. I love northern Idaho but I have never been there strangely enough. My parents met in Couer d'Alene back in the late 40's. He was a summer employee with the US Forest Service. My mother was secretary to the President of Gonzaga University. Later he got a permanent job with the Forest Service near Flagstaff, AZ. He sent a letter of a marriage proposal. She accepted, quit her job, and took a bus to Flagstaff. He met her at the bus station and drove her to his boss's house where a JP married them and then he drove her to a frame house in Happy Jack, AZ and they started their life together.

  24. oh the Northern Lights! glorious, Marilyn. and the peek at your end of the summer garden. makes me wonder where the whole season went. it was either too hot and humid to be outside ... or we were traveling. the coming of autumn, quiet and at home, is looking more and more appealing.
