Springter Arrives!

Sunday, March 30, 2025

The entire month of March has been full of sunshine and then lots of rain, and even some winter! As I walk in the early morning, watching the sun come up on the horizon is always a joy, especially now with the sun coming up earlier each day! It is such a promise from the Lord that each day the sun comes up - whether we see it or not, it still is there. I'm glad for the blue sky days when we can see the sun!

An early morning walk along the gravel road

Mind awakened, breathing in the frosted air,

Warmth of the sunbeams through the blue sky showed

I heard a robin singing while the pine trees whispered,

Yes, this is my exercise for both body and soul.

I give thanks for these eggs in the skillet! In a time of egg shortages, my chickens have faithfully laid their eggs all winter long.

A dear friend who buys eggs from me saves all her scraps for my chickens. They are so appreciative!

On my way to work one morning, I saw these elk grazing in a neighbor's yard.

They are losing their winter fur and look a little shabby. I hadn't seen them in a while, so it was good to see them enjoying the day!

Bandit, our little rascal, is really growing! Next month marks a year that he's been with us. He is such a lovable character! He was likely born in March, but we don't know his exact birthday. It's safe to say he probably just celebrated his first birthday!

Rhubarb is coming up in the garden!

We enjoy evening walks on our acreage, and it's exciting to see the new growth. We did get a good amount of moisture this year, while not much snow, but it was enough to encourage all these saplings to take a growth spurt!

I saved potatoes from my crop last year, and they have all sprouted and are ready to be planted. I will start them in fabric pots in my greenhouse until the weather warms up a bit more when I will move them outside.

I've been doing a lot of planting in these fabric pots.  This was something I tried last year, and I'm going to be using them again this year.  We got a great potato harvest with these bags.  Harvest is so much easier when you just dump the dirt out of the bag instead of having to dig!

With the weather being so nice, my husband and I went for a drive. It was a little early to be out on some of the back roads, and my truck got a mud bath!

Well, it wasn't anything a good car wash couldn't fix, and it was fun to get out and see some countryside.

I didn't stay up to see the entire moon eclipse but did get this photo. The eclipse happened around 1 a.m. our time, and I had to work the next morning. But it was fun to see everyone's pictures!  Did you get to see it?

This rainbow over my garden brought me such joy! I was working in the greenhouse when it began to rain while the sun was shining. I stepped out to see this incredible rainbow. What a promise! Thank you, Lord!

We have had a wonderful "Springter" season so far, with plenty of moisture and sunshine. We certainly can't complain when so many others have had such awful things happen with the weather. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who have suffered so much!

I recently made another video, I'd like to share it with you today - I made the video before I took the picture of the rainbow over my garden, or I would've included it in the video! I think you'll enjoy the song and the spring pictures.  Many blessings to all of you! Happy Springter!

  1. It's hard to believe that Bandit is a year already. It seems that it was just last month that he arrived at your home. I do miss my rhubarb patch that was left in our home in Spokane. I have no where to plant it here in the condo so I make do with Farmer's Markets. We had a lovely church service and Sunday school this morning. The praise singing was full of love and adoration of God and it was so good to be part of it.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  2. We watched the eclipse at sunrise on the island. What a great thing to use the scraps for the chickens.

    Have a lovely week, Marilyn.

  3. Beautiful song and lovely scenery. So nice to hear your March has been full of delights and spring like weather. Including the mud, lol. Happy Birthday Bandit. We are grateful we have only had rain, not ice storms or tornadoes as so many have, and not that far away either.

  5. Ahh...what a blessing to see that beautiful rainbow. Hooray for not having to buy eggs. We've gotten some from our son's chickens here, too. Your truck proves it is mud season. Our rhubarb is popping up here, too. Happy last day of March to you and happy April to you, too. April will bring that glorious day of rejoicing because of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior.

  6. The elk certainly are looking a little scruffy :)
What a good arrangement you have with your friend who buys eggs and also brings scraps for the hens. When we kept a small flock in our back yard I remember how they loved scraps!!
Happy birthday to little Bandit. He sure is cute.
    Have a wonderful April 💗

  8. How wonderful to have your own chickens at this time, and have help with the feeding of them :). There have been some pretty sunrises here, although we have been getting our share of rain lately, but since there have been fires, I am thankful that the area keeps some moisture coming, and no flooding.
The elk do look funny when they shed like that. good luck with your garden, we are trying to get ours ready for when the plants go for sale!

  10. Hi, oh the year is already flying by. :-) I am getting excited for the garden season too. Are you trying anything new to you this year?
I am growing cabbage. I grew cabbage a few years ago, so it is not new new, but I have not grown it in awhile. I am looking forward to making slaw.

  12. I love how you captured the peacefulness of your early morning walks and the beauty of nature around you. It sounds so refreshing, especially with the mix of sunshine, rain, and a bit of winter! The way you describe your gratitude for each new day really resonates. It's amazing that your chickens have been so reliable during the egg shortage, and Bandit sounds like such a fun character. Happy almost-birthday to him! Also, how exciting that rhubarb is popping up in the garden – I can already imagine the delicious things you’ll make with it! Keep enjoying those little moments.

  13. Hi Marilyn! Lovely post as always! Loved your photos, each one so unique and gorgeous.. words can't even describe some of them. I used to have chickens, at several different homesteads.. always did enjoy the fresh eggs at my fingertips. Want to bake and need eggs? run out to the chicken coup! Such fun that was. Your poem is beautiful.. yes taking walks in nature is exercise for the "body and soul" as you said. I need to do more of that.. though have a bum knee right now so not walking very much.. hopefully it will get better soon! You are so ambitious to preplant things! I'd like to plant some seeds this year, so pretty soon, I will get to the nursery and buy seeds to put in my garden beds and pots, and then of course, will buy a few "ready grown" flowers, like geraniums, pansies, etc. I have a few pansies coming up from last year, plus my Iris are really shooting up (the ones I brought from Madras). I'm so happy to see those, as they actually originated from my old homestead in Washougal, WA where I lived 30 years ago! Such a blessing to carry things forward! Hugs to you.... Marilyn J.
