A Naughty Boy!

Thursday, January 7, 2016

We've had lots of turkeys hanging around our place the last few weeks, especially since there has been deep snow on the ground, and little access to food or water.   We keep a bird feeder in the yard and whenever a bird comes to the feeder, there are always "droppings" and so the turkeys come for the birdseed droppings.  During the summer and fall, our free-ranging chickens kept the "droppings" cleaned up and left none for the turkeys.  Now though, the chickens are cooped up in the coop because of all the snow, and the turkeys have it all.

But there is a new problem for them... a very naughty, bored little "boy" has shown up to mess up their plans...

I let Mr. Simba (sometimes known as the Misters) out one morning, and the turkeys caught his attention.

Off he went...

I decided to catch the action with the camera and see what would happen. It was very early in the morning, not quite daylight, so the pictures will be dark...

He circled the outer edge of the turkeys and the turkeys weren't really paying attention to the orange fur ball stalking them.

Notice the turkeys fighting each other... unaware that an impending stalker is approaching...

As he continued to circle, he decided the time was right and...

... he approached the turkeys quietly and cautiously.

Uh oh!  The turkeys began to scatter, rather unwillingly.

The Misters sat right in the spot where the turkeys like to feed from the birdseed droppings.  The turkeys were not happy.  The squawks and turkey noises grew to a loud roar as they were quite upset at the new intruder.

Below is a short video that I got of the action ....

Turkeys grouping together just outside Misters reach... it is apparent that it is a game with them both.  Neither one are really afraid or seeking to hurt each other, and after a while...

Misters was ready to get back to being king in his warm comfy little "palace"....

... while the poor turkeys are outside trying to keep warm.  They stand on one leg and switch off to keep their feet from freezing in the 0 degree weather.  It amazes me how the Lord created animals to have the perfect attire for whatever weather conditions they find themselves in.  I felt so sorry for the turkeys and wished I could have helped them, but I know you can't interfere with nature and the natural process the Lord has ordained.  And so from my comfy warm spot inside the house I watched the poor turkeys do their best to stay warm, knowing that I must let nature have its way.  That is hard to do sometimes, especially on days when it is so cold outside!

Just a little glimpse into the never ending interaction we have here on a daily basis with the wild animals who come to visit.  I am never too far from the window on days like today looking outside into our winter wonderful-land and watching the antics of our winter visitors.  :)

  1. What a fun post! We raised turkeys when we had our farm. They would hang around when we sat in the sun, and share my lounge chair. They are a comical bird.
How neat that you have a flock that visits to feed in winter! There seems to be something for you to enjoy daily where you live.
    Happy New Year, dear one.

    1. Yes, these turkeys are quite entertaining! They squawk and carry on and fly out of the trees where they are roosting whenever I go outside, and now I have a wild following, lol! They know I sometimes shake the bird feeder to let out a bit of extra seed for them, and they don't forget such things, lol!

Yes there is always a bit of excitement around here! And I love it all! I'm sure there are things you must miss about having your farm. :)

Hope you are having a blessed and wonderful day, and do appreciate your visits!

    1. Yes, those turkeys really are pretty big... and sadly, a bit ugly! Poor things! The father away from them they don't look so bad, but up close, they really are pretty scraggly, oh my, poor things! We've been enjoying watching their antics for sure! :)

  3. Ha!! Your little kitty doesn't look so scary in his cuddly little blanket, does he? :) Great post, I love watching the wildlife outside my window! We have many turkeys in our area also. Do you get bears bothering your feeders? I have just now started leaving mine out at night, praying the bears are hibernating finally.

    1. No, we haven't had any bears bother our feeders, and for that I am thankful. We had a bear hanging around this fall, but never found him around our feeder, as we have two dogs that sound pretty scary, lol! Yes, I do hope the bears are hibernating now, but we still have to watch out for the moose. They are certainly moving around this time of year looking for food. I haven't seen any here yet, although they usually do show up sometime in January or February when food sources get scarce. :)

    1. Haha, I wondered if anyone would catch Rudy crowing in the video... he can see the bird feeder from the coop, and gets quite upset seeing the turkeys getting the droppings they used to get, lol! I agree, this country life is pretty great Nancy! :)

    1. Oh indeed dear Cheryl, it was pretty awesome that I was able to capture the action on my camera, you know how that works sometimes... as soon as you shut it off, or go back inside, something funny happens, and you missed it... but not this time, it was pretty great to capture their little "game". LOL! I understand your wish and desire for snow! I am long for more myself... as we have had warm temps here in the 30s, and our snow is melting FAST! So sad for me, because I just love it. And not much hope in the forecast either... :( Appreciate your sweet visit as always, and pray that you have a blessed and very special day my friend!

  6. What a very unique opportunity! I'll bet it was quite interesting and entertaining to watch. May God bless you and your family and help you stay warm. I often wonder how the creatures outside survive the intensities of cold and heat.
    Enjoy your weekend!

  8. Oh what a delightful way to start my morning :) yes, I agree with you we should not interfere by doing so, we unbalance the natural way of doing things. Our God made them to withstand those temperatures. He is truly amazing!

    1. Our Lord is so amazing, such intricate detail paid to every living thing... so perfectly and minutely created, and how he prepared them for both winter and summer... amazing! Indeed, although tempted to try to help them keep warm because I hate to see any animal in trouble of any kind, I know though that I must let nature work its course. Tis better that way! Appreciate you dear Mari, and praying the Lord's sweetest blessings on your life today!
