A Jar of Sweetness

Wednesday, April 8, 2015

The mail carrier brought me a very precious piece of cargo!  It was an unexpected gift - and those are the best kinds!

When I saw the name on the package, and felt the package a bit, my mouth began to water, because - I had a suspicion of what I was going to find in the package, and I could hardly wait to open it!

Inside the very carefully wrapped package was a beautiful sparkling jar of homemade maple syrup made by my dear friend Lynne.  (She has a blog post here about her efforts at collecting the maple syrup).  Collecting maple syrup is a LOT of work, for very small but hugely sweet rewards!

Did you know it takes 40 gallons of syrup collected from trees to make just 1 gallon of maple syrup?

It is very precious stuff indeed, and I can only imagine all the hard work it takes to produce this small amount of sweetness!

I tried this maple syrup on my homemade sourdough pancakes - what an incredible treat!

This special jar of sweetness will be treated with great love, and not one drop will be wasted... I might even lick the plate clean ;)

  1. How very very sweet for your friend to send you that sweet sap! There is nothing like REAL maple syrup, is there? When we used to make it as soon as my Uncle's back was turned we (us girl cousins) would sneak a big container of it up to the house and make maple sugar with it. It is still one sweet I CANNOT resist! xo Diana

    1. Yes, it was very SWEET of her, and I love the pun intended, lol! No, there is absolutely nothing like the real syrup. It is so precious to me, knowing how much time and effort she went to, to make it and send it to me! I am blessed!

  4. Oh it looks so good! We tried to tap into one of our birch trees, but the sap wasn't running yet. We've heard you can make syrup from them too, but it takes so much to make one gallon. They sell Birch Tree Syrup in the stores up here but it is very expensive. What a wonderful treat from a friend!

    1. Yes it was an amazing treat! I'm still enjoying every precious drop! I did not know that birch trees produced sap. We have no hardwood trees here where we live. It does take a tremendous amount of work to get even one gallop of syrup!

    1. Oh my goodness, it was just so amazing, and "store bought" maple syrup doesn't even come close to tasting as good as yours. I consider myself to be so blessed with this very precious and sweet gift!
